This Diwali, I had the pleasure of hosting a mega virtual meetup focusing on supporting small local businesses, which brought together over 60+ enthusiastic attendees. Our meet-up centered on using Maps and other Google products to uplift local shops, artisans, and small business owners during this festive season. This meet-up is a part of #mapsforall meet-up series which focuses on helping local businesses, map Accessibility information, learn, share tips & do fun Map edits to reflect Inclusivity for all !
The meet-up started with my presentation where I demonstrated how effectively we can leverage Maps features like ratings, reviews, photos, various Maps edits and listings on Maps to bring more visibility to local gems. We also discussed how as local guides we can host meet-ups , photo walks , etc to promote small local businesses and be ‘Vocal for Local’. Here are a few tips shared during the meet-up on ways to support small local businesses near you !
The meetup was filled with interactive exchanges and personal stories! Attendees shared how they’ve supported small businesses in their own communities. We even showcased our Diwali shopping, highlighting unique items found in local stores.
Here is an insta reel showing how I did my Diwali shopping for this year by shopping and eating at small local business shops/eateries
In the spirit of celebration, we held a contest to choose the best ethnic attire, filling the room with colour and joy. Since all looked amazing in their ethnic wear it was difficult to choose , we took a poll and the winner was @ModNomad ! This gathering wasn’t just about supporting local businesses but also a cultural immersion, where Local Guides across the globe came with a great appreciation for the Indian heritage and showered their joy of celebrating Diwali with all !
We also delved into the rich cultural tapestry of Diwali, discussing its historical and spiritual significance, and sharing how it brings people together across communities. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to connect more deeply with each other and also learn something about our Indian culture.
A big thank you to all the attendees ! Please continue the enthusiasm and do support your local small businesses always ! Happy Guiding !
