About Ussangoda Beach,
Ussangoda is a special beach environmental system in south cost Sri Lanka. It’s known for its geographical uniqueness compared to other beaches in Sri Lanka. Because of its value, this beach area is protected as a National Park.
Ussangoda National Park is the 21st national park established in Sri Lanka, in order to protect the beautiful environmental systems, geographical, biological, and also archeological values. This is is joining the Kalametiya Wildlife Sanctuary on the east side too. Ussangoda landscape is unique, with red soil, and having lush vegetation of grass and moss all over the place. It’s a unique beach because of the high ground closer to the beach because such beaches are hardly seen in Sri Lanka
How we went there
We reach Thangalla and reach Ussangoda beach. There was a perfect camping location by the beach but unfortunately, we were too late to come there. There was another group who came earlier and pitched their tents. So we had to go to the secondary camping location bit further.
Marked the campsite on maps
We took the opportunity to explore the surroundings and of course capture some photos.
When the sun started to set we hurried to the camping location and pitched our tents. Then we hurried to collect wood for a fire. Because we got the news that a couple of wild Elephants from Kalamatiya park has been rooming the area last couple of days. And to make things worse they were seen today about one mile from our campsite. Out of fear we collected a good load of wood and @kasunaaa took the lead in setting up the fire.
I got together with @SupunW and started prepping up some food for the night. It was a clouded evening so we couldn’t see a beautiful Sunset or Stars in the night sky. But our bond fire was lighting the beach. Some good tasty smell was starting to come from the kitchen area. Haha
Everyone had a wash and got together around the bond fire. We all talked and shared our stories and experiences. Our past local guide adventures, map expeditions, and future plans. And a lot of other fun stories. We also talked about Ussangoda and legendary mythical stories surrounding the area’ it was very late when we all call it a night.
The next day morning we went to explore the Ussangoda beach in full sprint. All the unique geological differences. The plains, the grass the cactus trees we enjoyed a lot. And we marked the camping ground on the maps.
Then we noticed a sad scene on the beach. There were some plastics. Plastic bottles, toothbrushes, Biscuit wrappers, etc… Knee Know Knee Know Local Guides clean the World mode on…!!! #LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld
We collected as much as plastic lying on the beach and nearby bush area and took them to the trash bins about half a km away.
Then the sun started to take its toll on us. We finished our 360 photo coverage and went back to the campsite. Clean the area and say goodbye to that beautiful beach environmental system…
That was the end of another Camping adventure with mapping
and SV photography for Sri Lanka Local Guides.
