Baguio City is considered as one of the oldest City outside of the capital of the Philippines. This is because the city became a chartered city in 1909. It is because of this that a lot of structures from way back were built and with the current rapid urbanization these old structures are slowly disappearing. Memories from our historical past are vanishing. Hence, the inspiration to let the younger generation know the existence of these heritage sites tucked inside the central business district of baguio. With about 50 budding local guides most of whom belonging to the younger generation, we embarked on a photowalk to capture, map and hopefully preserve even in photos these important part of our city’s history.
The Photowalk started with an orientation and introduction on how to become a local guide, and how to contribute to Google maps. A short mobile photography tips were also done.
Our First Stop:
Casa Vallejo
This building was among the first structures in Baguio City, built in 1908-1909 the building served as barracks for workers. At one point the building became dilapidated and seemed abandoned until it was turned into a commercial establishment where Casa Vallejo Hotel is found along with other business establishments. 60% used during the original construction of the building are preserved.
The participants were given a tour of the building to show the structures that were preserved in the building.
