[RECAP] Sunrise at Pidurangala 🌄

Sigiriya rock is a famously identified place all this time. But looking at its fullest dimension from a far distance is a different experience. Also, I wanted to explore a site where all these people take selfies with Sigiriya being in small size. I browsed through all the places of high altitude near this majestic rock Sigiriya and came to know about Pidurangala. So I wanted to go there anyhow. Also, I found tourists coming to this place in a large number. So I targeted this and selected this place to have a meetup and published it. @IsurangaD said he would join me since he was planning of hosting another meetup in Dambulla the day before.

I heard that there’s no proper way to reach this place, and it is challenging to reach there without proper lighting, especially when the sun is off. Anyway, I wanted to see the sunrise from this mountain. I checked with them the opening time of counter, and I went there earlier in the morning. I reached there a day before my meetup with my family on a weekend trip. Also, I noticed a fellow local guide was hosting a meetup, and I went there too. Recap of that meetup will be posted by him soon.

Here is a meetup photo from that

However, in the beginning, we planned of cycling to the Pidurangala. I asked few guys who were at the hotel where I stayed and who are native to that place, their advice was not to go cycling in the dark (Morning 4.00 am) since there will be a wild elephant and unlike. So we booked a truck. After a big struggle to get away from bed early in the morning, we got into the truck.

We reached the destination, took tickets, and started climbing the rock. It was darker than we expected and we thought we were almost lost in the jungle…. Ha ha ha…

There were lots of honeybees buzzing around, being a bit afraid, we continued to climb.

Then after 30 minutes again I felt like we’re lost. Still, we continued, then there were red color signs on the rocks to direct people. It was so dark everywhere and scary.

On the way, we met a foreigner traveler, it seemed like he’s used to this climb. He gave us some motivation, telling that we’re on the right way. When we reached there, we were all soggy with sweat, but there was a cool breeze of morning wind coming along the rocks, it was so refreshing.

Now, for the third time, I felt lost. Because, I couldn’t find where the East is, to capture the sunrise. Then Isuranga took his mobile compass out and found East. We fixed the camera ready and were eagerly waiting for the sun to come out and light up our day.

Looking at the number of foreigners in our surrounding only we recognized how famous is this place, even though we didn’t know much about this place before going here. There were a lot of foreigners. Also though it was a bit cloudy and couldn’t capture the sun well, it was a lovely experience.

This time, I realized the fact that the hardest path takes us to the best place on earth. Capturing a lot of awesome photos and videos of the sunrise, we came down.

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with many local attractions, I would like to invite you all to come and enjoy the natural beauty here
