We couldn’t have asked for more exciting meetup than that of our meetup on Saturday. Awesome Local Guides from different countries joined despite some challenges adjusting to the games. The meetup was inspired by @CaroGuiniazu post Being a Local Guide in times of crisis to do something really fun during the crisis. When I messaged to her tell about it, she was thrilled to join us despite the time difference and having kids.
Since it was a healthy competition and we needed a big team, other local guides had to join and support. @Mayford was our timekeeper from Nigeria and didn’t miss a second for anyone, he was just too accurate on virtual. @DevJonga was our judge from The Gambia studying in Bangladesh and @Istobastos from Cyprus was our scorekeeper. @EduarddeBoer supported by sending a couple of questions for the Local Guides quiz. We did a test run with Google Hangout and Meet a day before the meetup and shared the group links so participants could select teams and get to know each.
During the meetup, we started with a quick introduction, then played our first game Where/What on Google Maps with 12 questions for each group making it 36 questions in total for 3 groups playtime 30 minutes, Google slides available here. Our 2nd Game was a local Guides Quiz which had general questions about Connect, Local Guides program and Google, same question format as the previous game. Slides available here. The last game we played was charades, we couldn’t play as planned due to technical challenges using Hangout and Google Meep simultaneously. Other major reasons are many local guides joined using phones only (game required two separate devices or laptop running both) and some didn’t quite understand the game.Charades is pretty difficult to play, even more so on a virtual. However, we improvised and it went just perfect which was one of the most fun part of the meetup activates. Charade slides hereHere are our final scores: Group 1 won group 2 by 5 points difference. The top players were Caro Guiniazu from group 1 and @Sagir group 2. Scoresheet available here.
We concluded by sharing our experiences as Local Guides, how the program has helped us grow, connect with people and how to impact communities. One of my biggest takeaways was Sagir saying “Don’t contribute because of the points to get to the next level, but to impact/benefit communities”. It was our first virtual meetup and we would like to apologies for some of the inevitable flaws which we hope to improve at our next virtual meetup.
To all the incredible Local Guides that joined the meetup as short as 2 minutes and the ones that couldn’t join due to other reasons, we are so delighted and grateful for your efforts. Thank you so much @rizbab28 @MadanKPradhan Matida @datsenko_marina @Saiyen Ankit Sharma, Jarie Jallow, Zainab Tambajang, Tida Kinteh
