Polonnaruwa is the second capital of Sri Lanka and most of the main archaeological remainings are concentrated into one area. Therefore it is the main tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. The Polonnaruwa Secraed City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it was inscribed in 1982. This Polonnaruwa period is influenced by the Hindu religion.
The meetup was planned at 7.00 am and it was started around 7.30 am. Initially, there were seven participants and after some time few left for an archaeological exploration in Polonnaruwa district.
Then we started the photo walk and lots of archaeological ruins are not listed on the Google Maps. While taking photos we tried to add missing places.
We tried to cover the entire site and soon we understood it would take few days as there are lots of archaeological remainings which are not listed on Google Maps.
There were lots of tourists and most of them were using bicycles to travel around the site.
It was a very hot day and after few hours we had a refreshment at the open market.
One of the most interesting things we found is the excavation pits at the Demala Maha Seya. It was neatly done and all the layers were visible and clearly numbered. This may be a good chance for any one to see a real archaeological excavation.
Finally, we visited the Parakrama Samudraya, a large tank constructed by king Parakramababhu. The tank was almost empty due to the severe drought in the Polonnaruwa.
