Recap of my first meet-up : Mixing food and games!

Yesterday, I hosted my very first meet-up in Quebec city! :grinning:

Although I was only able to gather together a very small group of people, we still gad a lot of fun and had the chance to enjoy 2 original restaurants. The concept of my meet-up was to discover restaurants that mix both games and food, a tendency that seems more and more popular in Canada and in North America.

First stop: LvLOp Bar

This restaurant and bar location was the very first of its kind in North America then it opened over 3 years ago! The place is perfect if you’re into video games… but also if you’re not. Once you enter and order something to eat or drink, you have free access to all of their gaming options. They also host events for gamers and streamers.

We had the opportunity to talk with one of the owners who took us on a tour of the place. They have all kind of consoles, computers with almost any game you can think of, TVs shooting live streams, and more. He told us how the idea was born and how proud he is of seeing the positive outcome it has had on the gaming community.

We also talked about Google Maps and how the Local Guides program is helpful for future customers. He explained that even though they are currently not able to comply with every request (such as accessible bathrooms), they take the best care possible of every client that enters their restaurant. They really manage this place with a sense of family and community that is truly inspiring!

Second stop: La Revanche Pub

For all I know, La Revanche might have been the very first place in Quebec city to mix games with food. Known for having the biggest boardgame collection (they have over 1300!), this restaurant is all about fun. They have both a bar section and a kitchen section, allowing customers that are under the age of drinking (18 in Quebec) to also enjoy their facilities.

What makes the place very unique is that they have staff entirely dedicated to animation. Therefore, you may ask for a certain type of game with a certain number of players and they will take care of suggesting options from their collection. Once you settled on your game, they also help you set up the board and explain the instructions so you can avoid all the reading! Because of that service, they charge a flat fee per person, but you may stay in and play as long as you want.

We also had the chance to meet one of the staff members who showed us around and brought us some games to try. He explained the type of clients they receive and other services they offer, such as animation in external events (such as weddings!) We had a lovely time and we were able to enjoy the location even if we stayed for only a little time.

My overall experience

I will say: organizing a meet-up in Quebec city was hard. I tried to promote my event through Google Maps and social media, but I really didn’t have a lot of replies or interest. I still had so much fun and would enjoy participating in a meet-up again, but the effort I put in was very high in comparison to the result.

At the end of the day, I’m happy I have discovered new places and had the chance to take more time than I usually do in each location to really ask questions about the business and understand their vision and mission. I will for sure go back there and incorporate these habits to my next visits in any other location! It is for sure very helpful for reviewing and answering questions on Google Maps later on!

Now, time to write my reviews and post pictures on GMaps

Congrats for your first meet-up @mhcouette !!!

Here in Sao Paulo we also have a bar like the second one you went. It’s the same experience you mentioned, but I must confess I’ve never been there :disappointed:

And I totally agree that’s hard to organize a meet-up like yours. I think people still don’t know about Local Guides and meet-ups. Is hard to grab attention and to find fun things to do. One day I’ll visit you and we’ll have a photo walk.

That was an awesome meetup, @mhcouette . I loved your recap. I had no idea about this tendency to mix games and food and Canada, and if my friend @RogerOhayashi hasn’t commented that there is at least a similar place in Sao Paulo, I’d say that this tendency hadn’t arrived in Brasil so far. You did a great job running this meetup and presenting it to us. Cheers, Alexandre

I’ll be waiting for your visit @RogerOhayashi  :camera_flash:

You should definitely go and try it, I’d love to know if it’s has fun over there than it is here!

I’m thinking a photowalk would be a very good idea, but maybe more in summer or fall, because the weather right now is sooo unpredictable… Maybe I’ll give it a try when it gets warmer :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks @AlexandreCampbell for your good words, I’m hoping the tendency gets all the way to Brasil soon. Gaming and eating/drinking go so well together :face_with_hand_over_mouth: Cheers!

@mhcouette great recap post. As a human who enjoys food, drink, and gaming (both the board, and digital variety) it sound like a fun Meetup!

It sure was! Thanks for the support @dodonnell

Wah, mantap, mantap.

It’s a great Meet Up Recap, @mhcouette , eventhough the Meet Up itself, as you said, only attended by a very small group of people.

But I’m glad that you still continue the Meet Up, exploring things, and have fun.

That’s great. Kudos!

Hello @mhcouette ,

Thank you for sharing!

I am glad to learn that Local Guides are hosting meet-ups in one of my favorite destinations in Canada.

You are correct in pointing out that the concept of combining food and games is becoming quite popular in Canada. I think the weather might play some role in that :). When in Toronto, I also got to enjoy the combination of delicious food and board games.

I hope the attendance does not discourage you from hosting more meet-ups in the future.

Sometimes, good things take more time. For now just enjoy the fun and keep sharing the experience :).

You might be right @Ekattotii , probably us Canadians need a bit more indoor entertainment when the weather is too cold (such as today!)

I’m glad to hear you had the chance to try it out in Toronto, I’m definitely going to focus on finding more of these original places and keep sharing!
