This was a first and unique kind of thing to be done in our community, and as Local Guides we came out together in numbers to support some of the communities that lack access to some infastructure due to the kind of terrain they are located in. The community is located along the Lagoon Front Akoka. Good thing we got a group of dedicated and hardworking university students who decided to join us on this day for our meetup, Keytothecitylagos. They belong to a community that helps volunteer in lending a voice out there in support of this communities and also helping in giving out relief materials to such communities. They felt very happy to get involved and volunteer side by side along with local guides. It was a great experience
Our aim and activities of the day was to
-
Meet and Greet
-
Clean up the community
-
Add places and street view imagery that are not yet added to the Google Maps
-
Do a small thanks to them by donating gift items and all other important materials that are necessities to life.
-
Teach how to use the internet & Google Maps
-
And of course share ideas together as Local Guides on ways to improve the maps.
They were lots of plastic and dirts that were across the shores of the River so what we did was to
beautify the dirts, The State waste Management system doesn’t come to pack their dirts due to the lack of easy access to the community, so the only option is burning them and that is not an option for the environment due to pollution, hence we poured paint to beautify the dirts to make it colorful and bearable as a temporary measure as they will kill the breeding places of mosquitoes.
While we were engaged in activities, Austin was busy helping out in taking 360 Photos of the some part of the communities so that they can be uploaded to Google Maps.
We took a lot of pictures to be uploaded to the Google Maps such as the Lagoon and the 3rd Mainland Bridge which is one of the longest bridge in Africa.
Some Experiences From Local Guides During The Meetup
I had the privilege to interact with many of the Local Guides who came for the meetup and they felt very happy to be part of a great community efforts such as this. Said many who attended. They were all happy and smiling during this excercise, and the photos from the meetup album shows it all. For me it was a great experience, I had the opportunity of meeting with new Local Guides, and connecting with them. some I haven’t met them before, we do only talk on connect, for some it was the first time. I was glad to share some of my experiences together on this day with the different Local Guides who came.
We spent a total of 6 hours on this day. Yes 6 good hours of happiness helping the community. After the meetup we drove back to the University were some of us parked our cars, I was shooting my connect live video application with some other Local Guides and we discovered a newly added Google stand in the premises, so we decided to pay a visit and talk to some of the staffs on ground. This was another lovely avenue to round of the day. We took photos together and we were handed some little gifts to go home with. This is why I love been a Local Guide, you get to explore beyond boundaries when we see a new thing at sight. Thanks to Google my day ending been happy after all.
The theme of the meet-up was tagged Lending a helping hands to our community. I am glad we all finally did that by extending our shared values as Local Guides to our community. It is a good thing and a great delight to find similar people around you who share the same passion you have. Thanks to the Local Guides Program for this avenue. Thanks to all the Nigerian Local Guides who came out to support and participate in this meetup excercise on this very day. You all are amazing and i can’t wait to meet and connect with you all again. We are looking forward to more future events such as this.
