The World Children’s Day is celebrated on 20th of November to commemorate the Declaration of the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly that took place on 20 November 1959. So as a celebration of children’s day, I recently hosted Maps for kids #ChildrensDaySpecial meet up. This meet-up was also a part of #mapsforall series 2021 (which focuses on helping local businesses, map Accessibility information, learn, share tips & do fun Map edits to reflect Inclusivity for all). We started our meet-up at the famous Cutty Sark , a kid-friendly museum arranged around the eponymous ship that used to speed tea from Asia to Victorian Britain and ended our meet-up at the National Maritime museum.
The meet-up started with exploring the amazing Cutty Sark which was once the world’s fastest ship(built in 1869) , setting new records every time it criss-crossed the globe to bring back precious cargoes of tea , coffee , etc travelling around more than 16 countries! Initially it was just me and my kid to start but soon I met new parents with kids there who were curious to know why I was taking photos around the ship’s deck only when either no one was there or asking them if they were fine if I took the photo ! I explained to them what I do as a Local Guide and how our contributions help others. I was happy to have a small knowledge sharing session with them. I got an amazing opportunity to share how photos , reviews, ratings can make a big difference to help a local business grow ! After this session , we took photos, videos , answered a few questions and updated our reviews and ratings on Maps. We then went to the local Greenwich market to enjoy food and drinks (plus support our local food markets via Maps ! ) After filling our bellies , we decided to go to the National Maritime museum. We enjoyed our time at the museum , explored the kid-friendly features there and enjoyed a fun pottery session with other kids and parents, post which I shared a few tips and tricks to help local businesses and Ways to make kid friendly Maps contributions to some parents in the museum. Here is the photo album for more pics. We also had amazing food and coffee at the local Greenwich street market and then headed home !
Here is a quick recap of things we enjoyed doing at the meet-up :
- Click and upload photos and videos on Maps
- Answer question /answers and do Map edits
- Share knowledge about Local Guides program with fellow parents at the museum
- Enjoy a fun pottery session with other parents and kids at the museum.
- Enjoy the local Greenwich street food and cuisine and support the small local business
I really enjoyed the meet-up as I not only got to understand what to look for when travelling out with kids and how Maps can make the whole process so calming and stress-free but also got to be a child again and have fun with my kid especially during the pottery session so it was indeed a ‘Happy Children’s Day’ for me !
How did you celebrate Children’s day? Which feature of Maps has helped you specially when travelling with kids?
