Hey folks, just tying up some loose ends and some very, very late recap post for meetup held in May this year (thankfully, still this year!).
In May, the Manchester Local Guides got together for some drinks and food before heading to the HOME Theatre to watch Amazing Grace, a documentary centred on Aretha Franklin and covers two days of recording as she performed her best-selling gospel album at a Baptist church in Los Angeles.
We started out with drinks at the Gas Works which was just next door to the theatre. Itās a fairly large venue serving drinks and food and also has a shuffleboard; ticking all the boxes for a great venue for groups! @ZoeOooe , @deadmanjones , @PeteMHW and @Johnbhewitt was there and we had a great start to the meetup, catching up and chatting away. After a couple of rounds, we then made our way to the HOME Theatre building for our pre-movie meal.
As you can see from the photos, it was great fun and the food at HOME Theatre is absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, we didnāt have time for desserts and after settling our bill, we headed for the screening rooms. Just to explain a little bit, Home Theatre houses a stage for live performances (plays, dances, musicals etc) but also has 4 screening rooms where they would show current movies as well as arthouse favourites. They have a bar and restaurant area as well as a gallery (for art exhibitions) and a shop! Itās literally a one stop shop for art and is focussed on promoting the local/regional art scene! Itās got a thriving artist community as well as amazing support from the public!
Unfortunately, despite the critics loving the movie Amazing Grace, the general consensus amongst the Manchester Local Guides was that it was just okay, bordering on boring. Sorry!! Maybe itās more suited for die-hard fans which none of us was. Nonetheless, other than that it was a pretty good low-key meetup where we got to experience two venues and inhale all that amazing artistic flair!
Have you seen Amazing Grace? What did you think of it? And do you have a local art scene? Are you active in it? Tell us all about these and more in the comments below! ?
It was a good MeetUp, with good people, a good long time agoā¦and a bearable film. Thanks for organising it and recapping it however long ago it was @AdrianLunsong
Better late than never @AdrianLunsong , Iām glad you chose to write it!
You all clearly had a blast despite the documentary not living up to the expectations. Perhaps more beer and shuffleboard will do the trick next time.
I havenāt seen the documentary and based on your verdict, I donāt think I will. I would love to visit Manchester however, but it will be for the football.
@deadmanjones Waitā¦ what?! I thought everyone was like āmehā for the movie! I thought there would be more āstoryā to it but it just dragged on and onā¦ but hey, what do I know about art! Lol!
@MortenSI Football fan? Man Utd or Man Cityā¦ pick one if you had to chooseā¦ although with the current results, itās rather easy! Lol! If you do swing by, do give us a shout!
oh oh May, hehe @JanVanHaver he indeed has very good memory .
Anyway nice recap, I didnāt see that documentary but besides its ājust okayā feedback I see you had fun time and good food which is the best aspect (both fun and food lol), thank you for sharing your experience.
@MortenSI all the best to Man Utd then for next season! My brother and dad are fans of Liverpool so they probably wonāt be sharing the same sentiment!
@LuigiZ thanks and yesā¦ Iām just super slow! @davidhyno I know what you mean about starting 2020 fresh! Lol! actually still have a recap post to do for a Sept 2019 event and I had wanted to do a recap post for either Connect Live 2019 or 2019 in general but so many things were happening! Letās see what Iāll do with the rest of my free time today!
I think youāre right @AdrianLunsong , and unfortunately it looks like they will have a very successful year and probably the next years to come as well.
