[Recap] Malaysia Coffee Fest 2019 Meet-Up

[Recap] Malaysia Coffee Fest 2019 Meet-Up. 27th July 2019.

Coffee is listed as the second largest commodity in the world by value today. And throughout the world, coffee drinking culture has been slowly but surely growing, especially in developing markets. The same can be said about Malaysia. Some time back, Malaysians partake only locally roasted and prepared coffee, but since a few years back, the huge influx of international coffee roasters and cafes, created an almost greenfield market for higher end coffee drinking culture. Today, there are myriads of coffee cafes throughout the city serving the highest quality coffee.

Malaysia Local Guides as part of our self educational and community program hosted a meet up for members to come join and experience the 3rd Malaysia Coffee Festival, held from 26 to 28 July 2019 in one of the largest malls in the city. This is 3rd year running for this event, which started off fairly small and has grown by leaps and bounds over the last 3 years. Here, many coffee companies showcase their best coffee products and equipment and new technologies. And it was an amazing opportunity for our community members to visit, learn about coffee, drink and share coffee and most of all, bond with other members in the community. Here also, we had taken down contact cards for many of the companies, so we can help update Google Maps with the latest cafe locations and contacts. It was a busy weekend, so only 4 of us came for the meet-up.

In the event, we had learnt about the types of coffee beans including Arabica, Robusta, Liberica and others and the many different ways to process the beans and fruit. And also how different roasting temperatures, duration brings out different flavors of the coffee bean. We also learnt about the many different methods to brew coffee.

One of the most popular ways to brew the highest quality coffee is via a manual espresso machine, where freshly ground roasted coffee beans and pressurized under high heated water and steam to extract the coffee under pressure (hence the word espresso). It takes a lot of skill and practice to learn to do this accurately. This method gives possibly the most delicious coffee most of the time.

A simpler way, albeit a more expensive one is to have a fully automated espresso machine where the single machine will hold, grind, form, heat and extract the coffee all with a single button press. This type of machine is well suited for self serve F&B outlets.

Coffee capsule machine. One of the most popular and simplest way to enjoy coffee anywhere without needing expensive machine purchase or heavy maintenance. Coffee is packaged into neat single use capsules. Many brands of coffee capsule machines are there.

Traditional drip filter coffee. Where hot water is mixed with ground coffee and the coffee is extracted via drip using gravity. One can just use a paper filter for this method, or invest in a simple machine for it.

Cold brew is the latest coffee craze in town, where ground coffee is soaked in cool water over long hours to extract the flavors from the coffee bean. It is said that cold brew coffee gives very floral flavors without too much of the bitter taste or caffeine.

Another very popular brew technique is using convenient brew packs where coffee is packed into small packs where hot water can be added, and out comes coffee with a built in filter. These are all use once packaging.

We were all treated to many skilled baristas who created many latte art, drawing decorations using milk foam on coffee.

Part of coffee culture is having lots of delicious pastries with our cup of Java. We did just that throughout the meet-up.

We took our time to shoot our meet-up 360 video. The video will give a good idea on the many participants of the Coffee Fest 2019.
We were glad we took time to visit the Malaysia Coffee Fest to learn more about coffee culture and technologies, and also got many updated information of all the companies which we will be updating into Maps. Hopefully next year, we would have more join us for this similar event.
