I had planned my first Photo Walk around my home town in an effort to update the images on listings around town and to try to meet up with other Local Guides in my area. It was also hoped that in doing so it would make local business owners aware of the importance of claiming their business listings and keeping the information current. This was also a priority action of the recently formed Tourism Subgroup of the Business and Community Alliance in Listowel, of which I am a member.
Upon submitting my photo walk application I was contacted by @Osaka78forTRUMP who invited me to participate in the World Wide Map Edit Walk which was taking place in various locations all over the world on the same day. Of course I accepted and so it was that Listowel was to represent Ireland in this fantastic event.
We began at Listowel Castle, where we were given a fun and interesting condensed version of the full tour by Eamon, who felt our life sized Drop Pin would make a good shield.
After our castle tour we then began the River Walk. Prior to this event the River Walk itself was not listed on Google Maps, so we added it as a Point of Interest and then added our photos to that, but it would be my hope that the walking trail itself will be added to Maps soon. I was aware that there were going to be some children attending so I organised a small treasure hunt for everyone along the way to keep everyone on their toes. Both the adults and the children were looking for containers in the undergrowth around the walk and in the town park.
After taking our photos in the Garden of Europe (another POI added on the day) we cut through the graveyard and walked back down through the town taking photos as we went and finished up back in front of the Castle and the Tourist Information Centre.
My figures from the day may be slightly inaccurate as several of the people that attended were friends and family members and not actually Local Guides, and so I have listed some of their photos as my own. I also printed out the WWMapEdit form and got people to fill it in physically rather than sending on a link and thus I have tried to add their information as best I can. I’ll know better the next time!
Currently the tally for photos added is 102, but I am waiting on another two people to add theirs, so I it should get higher.
Here is the album that I created for the group, people are still adding to it. My next mission is to create a video of the day.
