[Recap] Local Guides & AFROBEATS Virtual meetup

It was an exciting Saturday with so much joy and energy from our attendees (From Indonsia, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Cameroon, The Gambia, South Africa, Jordan)

It all started with some good music, no time to waste. As members joined the call, they joined in to some good jams playing from DJ Alpha’s end(@Alffiiy). The meetup was scheduled for 14:00h WAT but we started at started at 14:15h WAT as we gave time for others to join while we listened to the warm-up playlist.

We did a general introduction with everyone telling us their Name, Local guides level,Country and what their Favorite music genre is and whether they were fans of Afro-beats.

Some Highlights were;

-Nick Byroglou mentioned that his very first job was at the biggest record store in Athens Greece “Metropolis”. There he was working for two years at the ethnic music department where he got enlightened from great African musicians. Real World Records for example.

  • @OSAMA_1 mentioned how he knew two African songs which were shared to him by his military friends from Africa when he was still in the military, he told us that he had friends who were from Botswana, Tchad, Ivory Coast.

-**Anik Setyawati and @FalguniP **told us of their general love for music.

-** @Yannick27 **& Ngam Audrey mentioned their love for African music, especially cameroonian music as it makes them dance. Makossa, bikutsi, coupe decale being amoung their favourite kinds @Austinelewex loves Burna boy particularly and Nigerian hip-hop music in general.

We moved forward by having an open discussions of the places on Google maps where we go to listen to good music. Night clubs, snack bars and music festivals/ concerts were the most talked about.

Highlight: Yannick told us about his favorite snack which is the famous Las Vegas VIP club in Douala Cameroon. And how Douala is the city of “Njoka” (Njoka means enjoyment in Cameroonian slang) @nkwetche told us about his list on Google maps of Night life in Douala and we continued sharing about list creation and how it is important that we create more of such list on maps as it would help users who are in search of a place to distress after the entire Pandemic or anytime, we never know.

After all the LG talk on Lists on Maps, we entered an exclusive party that can only be offered by DJ Alpha. He gave us an virtual music tour from Nigerian music, to Cameroon, To Congo, to South Africa. Osama shared the two musics he had with him and we all enjoyed it. @LeyleyS was so happy to listen to Angelique as it reminded her of her childhood.

DJ Alpha took the request of attendees and played upon request.

@Ewaade_3A showed us some dance moves

Wow! @Lily_Asongfac

What a beautiful recapitulation. This is so detailed. And nicely written .

Yes @AlphaSays DJ Alpha did considerable well to blend those beautiful musics for us as the meetup went

I believe so many Local Guides learned more about Afrobeat, as so of the music which was played are not even strictly Afrobeat. :joy: :rofl: :joy:

I enjoyed the meetup and it took you so long to write about it. :astonished:

I know @mockata2 and @OSAMA will be glad to read it.

Please you both what do you know about Afrobeat if you really know, which is your best bet. :grin:

Thanks for your comment @Austinelewex . I indeed took so long to write this recap, I got cut up from one thing to the other, but better late than never ;).

I am certain we were able to learn a thing or two about afrobeat and thank you for your contribution during the meetup.

Hello @Lily_Asongfac , your virtual meeting has been like a virtual music party with a DJ :slightly_smiling_face: Thanks to you I understood unknown to me African music genres such as Bikutsi, Makossa and Coupé-décalé.

I’ve never heard of this musical style - Afrobeat, @Austinelewex
While listening to various songs of this style, I came across this song by accident. True, this song is not this style, but I liked it :slightly_smiling_face: I will share it with you

Is Patoranking popular in Nigeria?

What’s the difference between Afrobeat and Afrobeats something I couldn’t figure out?

Best regards!

@mockata2

Patoranking is popular in Nigeria.

Both Afrobeat and Afrobeats are the same.

The other is singular while the other is plural. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you. I like the song as well.
