[Recap] Karachi Accessibility & Map Editing Walk

Hello Local Guides,

As a part of advocacy,

#OneAccessibility, and team member of the campaign, we always try to find out and add Accessibile to Google maps, and help thousands of people indirectly, who are searching for the place where they can access easily. Specially those people who use :wheelchair: wheelchairs or the people who have different abilities.

Here is the recap of our Let’s help thousands in Karachi walk, which was a great learning session for me and my fellow local guides.

Firstly I want to say thanks to Local Guides Community, because I always thankful to you that you are not making world a better place but you are changing the people, from normal person to a thoughtful person.

We planned for an Accessibility and map editing walk at Allama Shabbir Ahmed Usmani road on my birthday 15th January , because I want to make my Birthday special with doing some meaningful work.

I reached there before 15 minutes of starting our walk.

There I meet my fellow local guides @SharjeelS and Abdul Raheem @ujjan , who specially came there from far away to attend the Accessibility walk.

We started from from of Disco bakery, there are dozens of electronic shops, and we realize that half of the businesses are not showing in Google maps.

One more thing we feel there, mostly shop haven’t any Accessible Ramp for wheelchairs but steps before Thier entrances.

We started to upload new places on Google maps, along with all necessary informations about Accessibility and uploaded pictures as well.

In between many shop owners felt curious that what we are doing and why, but when they know what we are doing they said thanks to us and gave us contact informations to upload on Google maps.

Taking advantage of the situation we asked the people , “what if someone cannot enter your shop due to no available steps or no accessible ramp?”
And almost all people answered same, “we never think about it, and that is first time we are feeling that this is very important issue, how a person feel when he/she want to buy anything from that place by himself/herself but they can’t enter there.”

We already got the benefits of this walk as we approached only a few people. The approached ones were compelled to think about being the hand of the ones who had none, also being the eyes of the blind and being the legs of those who had none.

We added around 19 new businesses there totally, but the main cause was aware people about Accessibility, and we were successful in it.

And that wonderful evening was ended with a nice dinner of fried chicken and chicken chatni Roll, which was a treat by my friends Ujjan and Sharjeel for my Birthday,

Thank you my friends you made my day very special with your participation in Accessibility & map editing walk.

Here is some pictures in album, because of dark, we didn’t took many pictures, but still these pictures are helpful for the people who are using Google maps to reach these new businesses.

Thank you and Shukriya ?

Well done @KashifMisidia

There is a lot to do, and your recap is so important because is showing a situation of very low awareness, but also a lot of interest an accessibility.

What if someone cannot enter your shop due to no available steps or no accessible ramp?” is exactly THE question. More sharp, if needed: do you know how much money your business is loosing, because a person with a wheelchair cannot enter in your shop?

Thank you for sharing this post with us

Hi @KashifMisidia
You are about to reform. Reform is a loneliness that challenges no one to look back. I hope you won’t lose.

Nandri @IlankovanT Bhai,

I learn alot by Accessibility walk in Colombo, hosted by you, and I m using that experience here in Karachi, how to host and how to lead. Yesterday first time in Karachi 36 walk, there were more than 10 local guides. And I tried to copy you, but wasn’t successful as you. But I hope in next meetups, we would be more better than yesterday.

Thank you so much brother.

Thank you @AnuradhaP

I missed to meet you in my Colombo visit, but I hope soon we can meet .

And yes I will be happy if our little efforts can make some improvement and difference here . Because as I saw in Colombo and KL, my city is far back for Accessibility friendly places.

But we are trying our best to improve it by our walks.

Thanks again Bhai :+1:

In Pakistan we need big reforms to make our cities Accessibility friendly, From grass root level to goverment level.

Some people are trying to aware our people about the sensitivity of that issue. And with the plat form of local guides connect , we have a chance to contribute our part for that noble cause. I hope we will successful.

Thank you brother

Hi @ErmesT you highlighted great points from the recap, yes that was very important questions which we ask to some shop keepers, but seriously they never think like this. Some people understand that this is a real issue, and what if someone from his family or himself will use wheelchair for any reason, so that time what they will feel?

That was a cruel question for many people, but the Universal truth. No one knows what will happen tomorrow.

I always admire and try to learn by your posts and comments.

Please keep Guiding us

Shukriya🙏
