VIDEO RECAP
Fagu Poornima is the festival of color which is celebrated in full moon day between mid-February and mid-May. Popularly known as Holi, it is celebrated a day later in Terai (plane) region than Hilly parts of the Nepal. The festival is the celebration of victory over demonic character. In Kathmandu the festival begins with the raising of Chir pole (find in the video) in front of Kumari House in Basantapur Durbar Square. Holi is known for the revelry that takes place with people dousing each other with water and colour. The festival ends with burning of Chir in Tundikhel. The ashes are carried home by devotees to get protection against evil.
The ‘Holi Festival Meet Up’ event was organized to promote the culture and increase the engagement in national socio-cultural events. Many tourists prepare their Nepal travel including Holi festival as a part of their itinerary. So it is we to share our cultures to the world and preserve them.
The event venue ‘Basantapur Durbar Square’ is itself a UNESCO world heritage site and the prime place for Holi festival celebration. Being the event host I was there at 10 AM. Later my friends Jagat, Nabin and Narayan joined. We entered to the tourist hub Thamel and played Holi with foreigners. Being excited, Jagat decided to buy a t-shirt and colour. Passing through the inner streets we reached to Bsanatapur entry point. My friend Annika from Netherland had given me a call before saying that she had reached to the venue already. But unfortunately I was not able to find her in a crowd and her mobile network was non-functioning. Later Laxmi and her husband joined with us and we rejoiced our moments with known and unknown people. Later we visited other places viz. Bhrukutimandap, Kamalpokhari & Narayan Chaur to join the crowd celebrating the Holi in respective places. It was already 4 PM and we spent 6 complete hours but it felt like an hour.
In ancient times thee Holi used to be celebrated with organic colours prepared from herbal plants and believed that no skin diseases would attack. Playing with water too is the latest trend in Holi.
