[RECAP] Geo Walk Meetup BH [27-09-2017] World Wide Geo Walk

Geo Walk Meetup Discover hidden gems (in Belo Horizonte - Minas Gerais, Brasil) was a part of the World Wide Geo Walk Meetup. The meeting would happen on Saturday, but for personal reasons I had to reschedule for Sunday. However, everything went great! The meeting called Geo Walk Meetup Discover Hidden Gems was organized jointly by several people from around the world, thus forming the World Wide Geo Walk Meetup. We met up at the CCBB (one of museums from Liberdade’s circuit) and from there we left for our discoveries.

The idea was to explore the museums of the area because is normal when somebody appreciate some museums outside of your own city but people often never have been in local museums.

By coincidence (and lucky) the city was full of events, so we decided to actually explore the events and leave the museums for next meet up.

We went to the bandstand in Praça da Liberdade (Liberty Square), where was happening a Michael Jackson’s fan meeting. People was dancing, doing the choreography or acting Michael’s videoclips and moviments/stories.

Then we went down to the lower center, in the Praça da Estação (Station Square) and the surroundings. There was happening the Praia da Estação (Station Beach). This event arise because the last mayor prohibited public events at the streets and Praia da estação become the way that we found to say no to this. Work so good and since then always happen. People go to there and celebrate life and our culture, we don’t have beach here in Belo Horizonte, so we’ll go to square take some sun, drink beer, play some games. Is very nice!

Underneath the viaduct was a capoeira circle, and on the other side a skateboarding contest, a little step, and a sarau later.
Along the Araão Reis (street that connects Serraria Souza Pinto Praça da Estação) had people salling art, a drama play happening and two points with songs for people dance.

At Praça da Estação, shortly after we arrived, a carnival block began a rehearsal, and we, of course, took advantage of it. hahahaha

We spent some time there and after we went to Savassi, where the traditional Jazz Festival was happening. We watched a little and we went out to eat at a Syrian eatery in Paraíba street. ‘Sítio Sírio’ was opened by refugees who came to live in our city and its inauguration not so long ago and already conquered a steady clientele, because the food is of quality and the price is not so absurd.

We ate, we went back to the show, watched some more and at around 10 pm we went to our houses.

A very enjoyable day and we really discovered the ‘hidden gems’. In these events it was possible to see that yes, it is possible to see people in the street on a sunday (here in BH is not so commom at sunday night) inhabiting places usually ignored, socializing and having fun despite the difficult times. Our gems are ourselves, people who want and can make the city a more cultural, safe and fun place for everyone.

Thanks @OSAMA to invite me to do this. Thanks @AGarner @khammami @JeslynL @deepakjhic. =)
