On the 28th of November, 2021, we gathered together to share health and wellness tips with one another and how technology is helping to ensure we have and enjoy better health.
A certified Medical Doctor was also on hand to share tips with us and to answer our questions as pertaining to;
- How often should we go for Check up? at this present time?
- How does Heredity affect our predisposition to certain diseases?
EXCERPT FROM THE PRESENTATION;
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
The primary difference between health and wellness is that health is the goal and wellness is the active process of achieving it.
So, some of the attendees who were present decided to share on what they believed Health meant and how they have been maintaining theirs.
@Saidulkarim shared with us that he avoids junk food and eats mainly organic food.
PAY ATTENTION TO ASPECTS OF YOUR HEALTH
To live a healthy life, we have to pay attention to our health;
- Physical Health
- Reproductive Health
- Mental Health
What other part of Health do you think we ought to focus on?
To this question, @Erna_LaBeau responded that; another part one should focus on is; 'Spiritual Health’. At the risk of being too religious, she explained that; this part of health is very important as it gives peace of mind. She also believes that it goes hand-in-hand with mental health.
If you were at the Meetup, what would you have answered?
HOW DO YOU PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR HEALTH/ HOW OFTEN SHOULD WE DO A CHECKUP?
- So, how often do you think we should do a Checkup?
- When do you think we should do a Check up?
- In the wake of this CoVID-19 Pandemic apart from the well known precautionary measures, which other measures do we think we should be taking?
We all shared with one another how often we usually visited the hospital, before we invited the Medical doctor; Dr. Olaitan Onayiga who works at the Government Hospital; Alimosho General Hospital, Igando.
- Dr. Olaitan advised that we should try to have a full medical checkup monthly and should visit the hospital but in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, visit to the hospital should be reduced as much as possible, so, one should visit only if one has a complaint but for those who have Hypertension and Diabetes, they should have a check up once every 3 months or 6 months
FITNESS
What is fitness?
What is the benefit of Fitness?
There is no better way to maintain a healthy physical shape than through fitness training. Fitness training is a combination of regular physical exercises and a healthy diet. Besides giving you the body you want, fitness training also prolongs your life and provides you with some mental benefits.
So, how is Technology helping us?
In times past, we used to be advised to visit the GYM, to go to the hospital but, in recent times, through the lockdown and its attendant effects, the Medical Health Practitioners and Fitness instructors have come to realize that; they need to bring ‘their Gym and their hospitals’ to us at home, on the playfields, on our wrists and most importantly on our phones.
How are they doing this?
Through Apps, Smart Watches, Gadgets for checking blood pressure at home, etc.
So, let’s take a look at some of them;
For Female Reproductive Health
The female body as we have learnt by now is a little bit complex, but as we all know many activities in our body is tied to our Menstrual cycle and the hormones controlling them. Two Apps that have been designed to help us keep track of these are;
These Apps helps women to know;
- Their Menstrual cycle
- Their Ovulation day
- Their Fertility window
The Apps are useful for women trying to conceive or prevent conception.
FITNESS FOR WOMEN
Of course, there are several apps designed to ensure that women keep fit at home, one of such is; Workout for Women: Fit at Home.
Workout for Women
All you need do is enter your details into this app and choose your area of concentration. Many people are of the opinion that exercising is only for those who want to lose weight, but I want to conveniently share with you today that; exercising is for staying fit, healthy and for looking younger than your age.
What’s the Benefit of these Apps?
- Ability to take charge of your health in a judgment-free zone. It’s just you and your Virtual instructor. Noone we be there to make fun of you
- Ability to sync your ‘reports’ to Google fit and to share on social Media your results.
- Will you take charge today?
Finally, Remember you don’t need a Fitness Merchandise or wear to exercise
FOOD
Finally, we talk about Food, everytime we choose to eat something, we should ensure that we eat a balanced diet and if we have a family history of some certain ailments; diabetes, High BP, Heart conditions, Respiratory conditions, mental conditions, etc., we should read up and try to find out what foods worsen these conditions and what foods improve them.
TIPS
- Yes! You can eat your way to a good health, long life and prosperity.
- While others may choose to chew drugs as food, make a choice to chew foods as drugs.
- Focus on drinking plenty of water, eat fruits every day and focus on consuming foods in appropriate quantity that result in a Balanced diet.
REACTIONS TO THE PRESENTATION
- @doc_dells shared with us other ways our smart watches can help in monitoring how many healthy steps we take a day and asked to know if all the Apps are free or paid
- Erna shared with us of an app which we can install on our phones that can help in monitoring and checking our pulse and our blood pressure
- @RosyKohli wanted to know how it is that some Parents are healthy, while the children are not and how Heredity affects our health
- @Arati opined that; Yoga is the best form.of exercise as one needs no special equipment to do it
RESPONSES GIVEN TO THE REACTIONS TO THE PRESENTATION
- To Doc_Dells, all the Apps are free to use while one or two of them contains ads
- To Rosy Kohli, the Doctor (Dr. Olaitan Onayiga) explained that some diseases such as diabetes and Hypertension carry a higher risk factor for the child of anyone who has it. If one has one parent who has any of these conditions, one has a 30% risk of developing it and if one has both parents with such condition, one has a 60% risk of developing same condition.
- To Arati, the fitness App was launched and we all watched and saw that all of the exercises carried out on the app can be done from the comfort of the home with no machine or gadget used.
Exercises which include but are not limited to;
- Squats
- Butt kicks
- Skipping without rope
- Russian Twists
- Spiderman plank
- Plank
- Claps over head
- High Stepping
- Jumping Jacks
- Squats
- Wall pushups
- Butt Bridge
- Donkey kicks
- Fire Hydrants
- Plie Squats
- Arm Circles
- Chest Press pulse
And so many other exercises. Like Yoga, once one learns the techniques of these, one can carry them out anywhere and achieve results. I do not know much about Yoga though, even though I had invited @TravellerG to come share with us about Yoga, he was unavoidably absent. It was good to see @Anil6969 well and healthy after such a long time.
It was a very simple, yet impactful and effective meetup, I hope we get to meet sometime soon to do a review of this lesson and maybe of our health.
A big thank you to all who joined in, I appreciate as always;.
