This is the first meetup hosted in Sri Lanka in parallel with the “Local Guide Monument Month”, a great initiative by @BishowvijayaP in the month of September.
This the first meetup I used the announcement feature of the meetup site. Initially, I have mentioned a wrong location as the meeting point of this meetup. I realize I have done a mistake and I used this announcement feature to inform the participants about the mistake and the correct place. Thank you @HelloJess for this new feature.
Around 8:30 am I got a call from Vajira and he said he would be late. I said ok and asked him to ring me when he reaches Colombo.
I parked the vehicle at 9.00 am in front of the Dutch Hospital and the parking supervisor came and ask how long I am going to park the vehicle. I said I will leave at 12:00. He asked me to pay Rs. 300/= for parking.
When I reach the meeting point, @IlankovanT , @vijaih and Chrishane Mendis were there waiting for me. I went to them and we were happy to see each other after a long time. @VijayHi is from Anuradhapura and she is spending this weekend at Colombo and we were so lucky to have her with us. After few minutes Tarala and his son came and joined us.
After the introduction, we decided to start the photo walk from the King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe prison cell. What Chryshane told us was something controversial. According to his study, the king was never kept in a prison. He said the king was kept in a house nearby. He is going to write a research article very shortly and everyone will have a chance to hear the true story.
We took some nice photos of the monument and there was a three-wheeler in front of the monument which was an obstructing when taking photos. When we informed the police officers nearby that we are updating the Google Maps, they tried to help us by moving the Three-Wheel. Thank you very much for your effort.
Then we walked towards the Dutch Hospital, which is now converted to a food court. Chryshane explained how the hospital was organized and how they have changed it to a food court. This houses very famous restaurant “Ministry of Crabs” owned by two former test cricket captains of Sri Lanka and two legends of world cricket Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara.
Our next stop was the capital building, where the Economic History Museum is situated. According to Chryshane it was built in 1914 for an Australian insurance company and it was the tallest building in Colombo at that time.
Then we moved to the Light House Clock Tower, which is a hybrid version of a lighthouse and a clock tower. Listen to Chryshane to learn about the history of this lighthouse in the following video.
After that, we moved along the Chatham street towards the York street. While we were walking we added few missing places and some photographs of the places. In the Chatham street, you can find few shops which sell old coins. Please see the video below.
Since it was a hot day we decided to have some refreshments and we went to the Pillawoos Hotel. Thank you @IlankovanT for the 360 photo.
Our next stop was LaKSala to see some beautiful handicrafts of Sri Lanka. They have a nice collection of handicrafts and prices are very reasonable. It was housed in a building built in 1900 by British, and the original building was built by the Dutch in 1687.
Tarala bought a gift for @IlankovanT 's wife’s birthday and another gift for Vijai. They were really happy. Ilankovan’s wife has given a cake to share with us, but he didn’t bring it. @KrithikaA , he said you went to Trincomalee, check what he has done to the cake.
Happy Birthday Krithika!!!.
On our way to the Delft Gateway, we took some nice photos of Cargills building, which was built during the colonial period.
The last historical monument we visited was Delft Gateway of old Dutch fort which was built in 1658 by the Dutch. It is situated inside the Commercial Bank building.
We are going to meet next Sunday for the second part of the monument photo walk at the Colombo National Museum.
After the walk I came to the park at 12:00 noon and the parking supervisor told me I was on time. ![]()
