[RECAP]Building the local guide community series I

At the end of this meet-up, we all agreed this was a successful meet-up. It’s the 5th meet-up I organised in a roll. I have organised 4 physical meet-ups and 1 virtual meet-up in the space of 2 weeks !!!

I was on leave and decided to give myself a nice cool treat and to carry other local guides along. This was a virtual one, and it’s one of those meet-up you don’t want to end, because of the local guides in attendance and the topic of discussion. We discussed Map Editing. We were about 20 local guides present, some had to leave before the end of the meet-up but most stayed. A few local guides attended from the neighbouring Republic of Ghana, we also had a connect moderator with us, it was a very successful meet-up. I must say Thank you to @Nuhuu for been a very intelligent, dependenable and active co-host. We worked together perfectly to make sure this meet-up took place. Infact he did most of the lecturing and presentation.

The Meet-up started at 10am WAT as scheduled and we had a very interesting and interactive sections of introduction at the beginning. We introduced ourselves very briefly and gave a little background to our local guide activities and journey. I realised just like myself, most local guides joined the local program unintentionally although we later realised how nice it is. I had been a local guide for 2 years before I actually realised !!! I only found out connect 1 year and 6 months ago. This gave way to Map Editing as we discussed along. I love Map Editing and it’s my favourite activity on the maps if you ask me. It’s the most useful thing to contribute as a local guide. We discussed alot about map Editing;

  • Adding places (exact point or location)
  • Adding /drawing roads
  • Front view of shops
  • Cleaning up the maps (Duplicate places especially)
  • Editing places for
  1. Hours of service
  2. Phone number
  3. Updating location
  4. Category etc

Nuhuu stressed that if we must add POI on the maps we must get the exact location. No use Adding a place and dropping the point in the middle of a highway or something instead of the proper location.

We were reminded about marking a place as duplicate and checking out which has the least reviews and ratings that helps the approval process. There was the issue of adding a POI while you are absent from the location as well.

We had a practical presentation of how to add a place on the maps, it’s amazing how many local guides still haven’t haven’t clue about this activity. There was a particular POI case study @Silooobaba wanted us to look at which we did. It was a duplicate POI and wrong location at the same time.

We also discussed about being active as local guides. There was an issue of incentives raised by some local guides. I gave my own opinion at this stage been a very constant user of Google maps. I had been using the maps long before I became a local guide, now am just happy to give back to the system what I had been given ! Nuhuu explained further how that Google gave the maps, In maps but we need to help supply the information freely.

We discussed other issues too like printing logos on T-shirt for meet-up and walk etc and @EmekaUlor was in at this stage. He shed more light on Map Editing been a moderator and also supplied us with the link where we can get Logos for use and the policies to follow. There were some level 10 local guides Participating and I appreciate their contributions @Shermill829 did well. There were others who participated actively @DigitalPope @Ibnmaikori @Zinta we missed @Zino and @ChinonsoOnukwugha there were others I’ll tag later as well. It was a really educative meet-up. We plan to hold more series as time permits.

Thank you all for attending and for reading the recap as well.

Cheers

Well done once again @SholaIB and @Nuhuu for kicking off this series. Sadly, I missed this meetup but it’s nice to see how an idea became a reality and starting from the basics will definitely help both old and new members of the community.
