A few hours ago we meet on Hangout and had a really great time together. The meet-up was originally planned to add Bengali (বাংলা) names to existing places on Google Maps. But due to recent temporary product changes in Google Maps we didn’t add names. Instead, we share how we can add names and share our knowledge and experience as a local guide.
How to add a name in a different language on Maps
On a computer follow the steps.
- Open https://www.google.com/maps in the browser
- Click on the hamburger menu
- Click on Language
- Now Select the Language you want to add names in.
- No edit the place and you should see an additional field to add name in that language as shown in this screenshot.
On a mobile, You need to change the default language of your mobile. To do this you need to navigate to the Language setting and choose the language you want to add names in. Steps may slightly vary based on mobile phones. Then you can open the Google Maps app and start editing and adding names in your preferred language.
One thing you should keep in mind that adding names in another language is not translating names as a sentence.
Not many photos in a virtual meet-up but you can see a few in this Photos album.

Virtual meet-up is a great way to meet people from different locations. Without virtual meet-ups, It might not be possible to meet ever. I really liked the idea and hosted my very first meet-up. In the last few days, I have met with local guides from around the world. I met local guides from Turkey, India, USA, Australia, Pakistan, Bulgaria.
Have you hosted a virtual meet-up recently? Please share the link in the comment so I can read the recap. Or if you have one upcoming then I’d love to join you.
