Our first Anambra Virtual Meet Up was “awesome” in one word.
The meeting which was co hosted by my humble self and the amazing @UchechukwuEnem was slated to start from 2pm WAT on Tuesday, April 21. We went live at 1:50pm and some early birds started joining in, and at 2pm at the dot, we commenced in earnest.
We had in attendance, Local Guides from Anambra (the supposed host state), other states in Nigeria and from other countries of the world, giving us a peak of 25 participants.

Introduction was the first on our agenda and we swooped into it without delays. Each participant was given a room to tell us their name, Local Guide level and their location. This was not achieved in a single take as more Local Guides joined in subsequently. Such persons made their introductions at a later time of the meeting.
The next items/tasks for the day were; the best practices to improve the maps and lastly, the DOs and DON’Ts of the Local Guide program. These were taken almost concurrently as we went back and forth due to how interwoven the two topics are.
With the vast and creative understanding of the program, works and good words from veteran Local Guides in the house, we were greatly enriched. It was an interactive session. Questions were asked and appropriate answers were accorded them in manners that put us all in the clear.
In summary, we were made to understand the following;
- Local Guide is a volunteer program, not for gains. It is a call to duty, and it is voluntary.
- Quality and consistency in content makes one stand out as a champion in the program.
- Posts on connect should be unique and relevant. One Doe’s not necessarily have to litter the platform with posts of all their three square meals for every day. They should rather post their favorite, first dishes or first attempts at cooking a dish.
- Avoid content plagiarism. Post only pictures you snap. Don’t hunt for them on the web. Do not go to a company’s web page and copy articles about them and paste in reviews.
- Steer clear of emotions while writing reviews. Don’t give a bad review because you have bad blood with the business owner or their staff. Neither shall you praise unnecessarily because a friend of yours works there or owns the business.
- Also discussed was, how to report or flag a content that goes against the program policy.
It was a great learning session.
