Howdy,
Well, I hosted my first meet-up and I was very happy with the outcome. A group of us gathered on South Capitol Street and walked by the following locations:
- King Greenleaf Recreation Center;
- Fort Lesley J. McNair base;
- Titanic Memorial statute;
- Riverside Condos; and
- Arena Stage.
I thought it would be interesting for the group to see how the neighborhood is changing and to explore the beautiful landscapes and historic buildings in the area. Since we took the back trail or the road less traveled, there wasn’t a lot of foot traffic and noise, so we had an opportunity to get to know each other and learn about our life experiences along the way. We ended the walk by The Wharf entrance and we walked to Marsala Art for happy hour. Overall, I think everyone had a really good time walking around my ever-evolving neighbor"hood".
The walk to the older side of The Wharf was very accessible, so it should be fairly easy for anyone using a mobility device to navigate without any major problems. There were sidewalks for the entire walk and there was accessible parking by Water Street, I recall seeing at least two wheelchair accessible parking spots. There really isn’t a lot of public parking in the area so two wheelchair accessible spots are awesome! We stopped and tried out the Bocce ball court. Unfortunately, it is not wheelchair accessible. There is a drop off causing a pretty steep threshold that makes it difficult for a person using a motorized wheelchair to access the court. I recommend building a ramp or sloping area for accessibility. These are simple suggestions that shouldn’t take long to fix. I hope someone addresses this accessibility issue ASAP.
I want to thank @Sean2sun, @Vinophotography, @JayCoder for participating in my first Accessibility - Geo Walk Meet-up. You all are rock stars in my book. I plan to host another event very soon. I’m interested in touring the newly developed side of The Wharf and check out the shops, restaurants, and bars. It should be a great opportunity to take pictures of the hottest spot in town. Stay tune!
