Caption: A counter with the inscription Schiphol at Amsterdam Airport
As part of a routine, I find time to access places I visit especially public facilities like airports to help add useful information to the maps. This time around, I took a tour of the Amsterdam Airport at Schiphol to see what facilities are available for persons with disabilities and special needs.
Unlike the Dubai Airport which is a noisless one, Amsterdam Airport has a public address system which is very helpful to people with visual impairments and some of us who missed our flights (while sleeping maybe).
Caddy and Wheelchairs
At Amsterdam Airport Schiphol thera are numerous wheelchairs and caddies to enable Passengers with Restricted Mobility (PRM) get to various points at the airport. The automated vehicles which operate inside the airport have zero emission, according to one of the Assistants and is available to help able and disabled passengers. Trained staff are assigned to support PRMs.
Dedicated Seating Area
At Amsterdam Airport each gate has dedicated chairs for people with special needs. There are clear signs to indicate this. They are given special attention like the priority customers. It is the first time I have observed this in an airport.
Elevators and Escalators
Like major international airports, the Schipol airport has elevators and escalators to support people with mobility isssues or to assist airport users who may be tired on walking briskly.
Restrooms.
The toilet facilities are carefully planned to accomodate everyone. From male, female, children, family and people with special needs.
A special board for baby changing and space for family is carefully provided for nursing mothers and fathers too.

After the walk around the airport, I spent most remaining part of my time watching some fishes in the aquarium. The shape and design caught my attention but the fishes helped me to learn more about aquatic life.
One of the amusing thing I encounted is the pronunciation of “Schiphol.” There are lots of contents online about it too. So is it “Skipple” or “Shipple” ? Free Wi-Fi is available.
While you ponder on that take a glance at the photo album
and do leave a comment or share your experience at Schiphol Airport.
