RECAP: ACCESSIBLE LAGOS - WAW 2023

This meet up was in response to the World Accessibility walk (WAW) campaign of @EmekaUlor and in solidarity with persons with disabilities PWD as the world marks the International Day of Persons With Disabilities (#IDPWD2023) on Sunday December 3, 2023.

Both Emeka’s campaign and the United Nation’s are reaffirmation of the need for an inclusive world which is spelt out in several parts of the SDGs. I quite frankly like to see myself as a friend of accessibility and so when this opportunity came, I quickly leveraged on it to show solidarity.

The meetup was a physical walk of solidarity to capture how accessible our city is. Below is the invite for the event shared on Facebook events and approved on LGC.

Our assembly point was Domino’s Pizza Ajose Adeogun street of Victoria Island.

I was joined by my wife and two daughter.
1800Hrs the walk started and took us through one of the top corporate commercial street of Lagos which houses the Zenith bank HQ which is notable for its Superb annual Christmas decorations. Photos were taken with accessible entrances in mind, focusing on availability of wheelchair accessible entrances.
Sadly as corporate as the street is there was a maximum of 1 in 10 corporate building having any form of wheelchair accessible entrance. Even our meetup venue didn’t have a wheelchair accessible ramp.

We shared some snacks from a Burger King outlet and called it a very good meetup.

Thanks to those who showed support especially @MrLabule . @EmekaUlor for encouraging this movement and @SholaIB for checking on progression of things.

Hello @MrFreez

Thank you for sharing this recap. Yes ! Accessibility features are not too popular here is west Africa. I always commented and share it whenever I find any. Although we have lots of people with special needs among us we have no plans for then so much. It’s high time we think of others and include them in our schedules and daily activities.

We want to make the world a better place to move around and live for all. I have been so busy of late, but let’s see how it goes for an accessibility walk here in PH(Fingers crossed)

Happy guiding

Cheers

Hopefully we can have more of these kind of initiatives and talks. Also If business owners pay attention our good map reviews describing either available or not of accessible entrance, I’m certain there will be improvements.

Hope to see your meetup in PH if possible too @SholaIB

@MrFreez

Thank you for organizing WAW Meet-up in Lagos. I remembered when we started the accessibility meet-ups in Lagos. It was difficult finding accessibility features but surprisingly we would see some especially in properly built places or even very old buildings on the Island.

This meet-up gave us spotlight on Connect

The series then led to another and finally One Accessibility Initiative.

We all agree that there is a lot of job to do and WAW is one of the efforts to enlighten people, businesses and communities of the need to make our products, services and buildings accessible.

Let us continue to do our bit until we achieve accessibility for everyone everywhere!
