♿[RECAP]Accessible Bangladesh, Part 10: Accessibility Knowledge Sharing

Mawa Ghat (river port) is an important ferry ghat in Bangladesh. Very recently it has become an attractive tourist spot for the Padma Bridge. Every day, thousands of people come here to go to the south and south-west of Bangladesh. Similarly, they use this ghat to come to Dhaka. By considering these, I hosted my 10th meet-up here to check and update the Accessibility features of this busy area as well there was an extensive discussion session on accessibility status in Bangladesh. in this meet-up @AbdullahAM and @KamalHossenR joined me to be a part of my 10th meet-up on Accessibility.

Look at our speedometer, it 86Kmh!!

As settled before, I and @AbdullahAM started at 9 am from Dhaka and @KamalHossenR started at 6 am from Barishal. AbdullahAM took his motorcycle to the venue from Dhaka. We reached our venue at 10 am and KamalhossenR joined us timely at 11 am. After greetings, we started our meet-up.

Inside this Ghat (launch terminal) we were happy to see these kind of walkways those wheelchair-friendly. Though for the crowd they are a little tough to use by disabled people. Moreover, there are temporary shops, as the below photo, on both sides of them. They also act as obstacles to disabled people.

Unfortunately, including the main entrance as below, no entrance to the terminal is accessible. Disabled people must take help of other people to enter the terminal.

The main entrance to the terminal

We saw 3 public toilets, like the one in the below photo, in this launch terminal. None of them have a facility for disabled people. Conditions of other public toilets also not better than this one.

After checking the accessibility features for one hour we took preparation for our second session, that is discussion. In this meet-up, we gave priority to the discussion. We discussed many things on accessibility as well other issues related to google maps and local guides connect. We discussed our future plans on accessibility and small businesses.

it was very sunny and hot today. During lunch, we ate very simple items. Mashed potato, egg, dried fish, daal, and vegetable with rice were our lunch items today.

After completing the lunch we went to the bank of the mighty river, Padma. Under the burning sun, we got very tired and decided to end our meet-up at 1.50 pm. Before saying goodbye to KamalhossenR we took some photos. Then we entered the terminal together and said goodby to KamalhossenR.

First of all, let me congratulate you all on the brilliant red shirts with the logos - this looks stunning :+1:

Also nice to see @KamalHossenR joining you.

Sad to see that the main entrance is not accessible.

I love the scene of cobblers and vegetable vendors on way to the boarding point.

Superb recap and photos @MukulR

Thanks a lot for your encouragement. Thanks for liking the tee. I will bring one for you when I will go to India @TusharSuradkar .

Bangladesh government has added accessibility facilities to other bus terminals, river ports, and railway stations. But this one seems different to me and I guess a reason behind this. From next year, the Padma Bridge will be opened for public transports and this port will be closed then. I think for this reason this one has fewer accessibility features.

@KamalHossenR traveled 4 hours from Barishal to come and join this meet-up. And it took him more time to return to Barishal. He and @AbdullahAM made my 10th meet-up memorable to me.

Thanks a lot for your nice comments @AbdullahAM Bhai. I enjoyed the thrilling motorcycle ride with you to the meet-up venue though sometimes I became scared with the speed of your bike. Thanks for that.

Yes, @KamalHossenR Bhai, should get special thanks as he came from Barishal with a bus journey of long 4-5 hours. Really, he did a great job to make this meet-up a successful one. I strongly hope to meet with you all again someday in the near future. Thanks

WOW!!!

Excellent Meetup Out of Dhaka Station. Mawa Ghat on the banks of the river Padma is one of my favorite places. I often go to this place when I am upset.

  • Write post very good.
  • Accessible information update.
  • Cheeked the facilities.
  • The red T-shirt is much better.

Hello @MukulR my dear. How are you?

I wanted to join this meetup. But I could not join due to family reasons. Thank you so much @AbdullahAM and @KamalHossenR join a meetup.

Hello @MukulR

I’ll like to say a big congratulations to you for these various accessibility :wheelchair: meet-ups you are embarking upon. You have been constantly on this, thank you for being quite considerate of those who have special needs and are depending on others to help them out.

I see the vendors of vegetables neatly arranged just like here in west Africa, the parks and walk ways also serve as little shops and markets for stuff, good to see that in Bangladesh  :+1:t5:

Like @TusharSuradkar I love your outfit and signs it’s very cute. The 3 of you make a very good team @KamalHossenR and @AbdullahAM Well-done kudos for a successful meet-up.

All the best to the 3 of you. Thank you for the recap.

Cheers

Thanks a lot for your kind words @SholaIB . I am glad that you like this post and my work on accessibility. Disabled people deserve us to support them. We should work for them as much as possible.

Various kinds of vendors are visible in public places like bus stands, railway stations, and river ports. This is a common scenario in the countries of South Asia. In a sense, they are also helpful to us as we can buy goods from them at lower prices.

Thanks for liking the tee shirt.
