As part of our advocacy, #OneAccessibility, we will share information about differently able and profile one location with accessible trails. Look out every week for this enlightening post.
One Sunday, March 17th, we held the Accessible Amakohia event to highlight areas in the community that promote an accessible-friendly environment. Amakohia is a community in southeastern Nigeria, within the Ikeduru local government area, close to Owerri.
As we strolled and observed, we realized that there is much progress to be made in Amakohia but were able to agree on three sights that showcased a move towards #OneAccessibility
Arugo Gardens is a residential estate with bungalows, attached and detached duplex homes. The entrance of the estate itself is one to take note of. There are no elevations that would prohibit individuals of all abilities to enter the estate, and there are signs and paints that guide you to where to go next.
2.Ebechere Global Enterprises Driving SchoolEbechere is providing an accessible-friendly connection by offering a walkway for the gutter. Although it is common to see gutters along the streets, what is not common is how the gutters are protected - if they are at all. While this may not be in line with one’s expectation of accessible-friendly, we should keep in mind the resourcefulness of and simplicity in this solution.
3.Ken’s BigWe are particularly in awe of the entrance to Ken’s Big’s restaurant. The first two things we noticed where the leveled ground. Many restaurants we came across had stairs but no ramp in sight. Ken Big’s also had a short rail to hold on to as you enter. The furniture inside was mobile-friendly in that they had different types for different mobility capabilities.
Apart from catching up and taking pictures, we also brainstormed on possible initiatives to grow the local guide community within Imo State. We have some great ideas that we hope to implement over time!
Cheers,
