Recap Accessibility Car Drive

First milestone towards a bigger cause………

Each step taken to move towards a goal is a milestone for me. Encourage yourself, motivate your own soul, and acknowledge your own efforts so that you can create a “Synergy” in the society.

To create this synergy, I planned an Accessibility Car Drive in Lahore. Since this was my first Accessibility meet-up during the smart lockdown period, therefore, I kept it for a concise period. The drive was only for an hour in a particular area of Lahore in Iqbal Town. The reason for choosing this area was that it wasn’t locked down due to Covid-19, and I could experience a variety of national and international chain’s Accessibility features.
Luckily and fortunately as I planned the roads were empty, and I could easily reach my starting destination right in time. As I mentioned earlier, we are still facing smart lockdown; therefore, other Local Guides couldn’t join, and I had to start my drive alone.

Iqbal town is one of the busiest roads in terms of shopping. All international and national brands are located in this area. Both sides of the roads are flooded with these brands. This creates a very healthy business opportunity for the entrepreneurs and ease for the customers to buy the stuff from one location.
The very first shopping mall I encountered was Al-Naseer, a Kuwait leading sports and fashion retailer. It was located on the first floor of that plaza while the ground floor was occupied by other retailer outlets. For the ease of the customers, they have installed an Accessibility lift BUT……

Like we say, common sense is not common, and I could actually feel this thing here. They installed the accessibility lift but there was no ramp for the entrance. So all I can conclude is that this option is useless for wheelchair-accessible public.

Moving forward, there weren’t many multi-story buildings constructed in this area. The majority of the shops had entrances at the ground floor but I guess they never thought of adding any ramp for the Accessibility. Each shop had one footstep at the entrants which isn’t a big deal for all of us. Yet keeping Accessibility options for all of us, they need to think out of the comfort zone.

:loudspeaker: HOLD ON FOR A SECOND!

Do you know your edits are published in just minutes now?

Yes, it is true. I edited the timings of the shops I visited, and I received the published email in a few minutes. BOOM… impressive.

So thumbs up for the Google support team for supporting the community at the back end :+1:

As mentioned earlier, I encountered different national and multination brands, and wheelchair Accessibility entrances are ignored by the majority of the shops.**Shockingly :astonished: !**Domino’s, an international food-chain, did not provide any wheelchair entrance or wheelchair parking.

Let’s make a commitment today, whenever you visit a place just add a two-liner review making a request to the management to install ramps for wheelchair entrance.

Finally, I would like to share the best thing in my Accessibility Car Drive. There was a mall that had four shops, and to make all shops accessible to wheelchair entrance they added a ramp on one corner of the mall. So all of these shops can easily be accessed by wheelchair users.

This shows that we can create a bigger impact by just getting out of the comfort zone and focus on our available resources.

Cheers to my Community.

Do share your suggestion in comments so that I can improve my map edits in the future.

@JaneBurunina Thank-you for the appreciation. As we say" necessity is the mother of invention " , so I guess this car drive meetup worked for me very well in the pandemic. I hope others can take this initiative too.

Cheers.

Thank you @KashifMisidia for tagging me here… and congratulations @MSulaiman for hosting this innovative meet-up on accessibility… I was amazed to see that even bigger brands do not have any Accessibility feature while the lesser known ones do have…

Keep contributing like this and take care of yourself in this situation…

@AnshukMitra yes. that’s the weirdest part that International brands do not follow international requirements but they never forget to follow international rules for profit sharing :joy: .

Thanks for your appreciation. take care new champ.

Hi @MSulaiman

Thanks for a well written recap.

Taking photos from a car can be very challenging since it is more difficult to move your camera into position for taking the best possible shot. Also, from your shots it looks like you might have left your car?

You mentioned that only you showed up. What are your thoughts / reflections on that?

It surely sounds like you got a lot done on only one hour. Do you always make edits on the go? I normally concentrate on taking photos while out and about and then make nessesarry edits later while uploading the photos from my home? Please share a few more details on your workflow.

Cheers

PS: Maybe you could also include a link to the invitation to this meet-up?

@Sarbland Thank you bhai.

Hello @MortenCopenhagen

Indeed taking pictures from car is very challenging especially when you have to focus on a particular area. And you are right I had to leave my seat for a single shot. And that was of the Accessibility lift.

Talking about this solo meetup, i guess smart lock down made it difficult for others to join the drive plus solo trip gave me the freedom to move around  and taking as much time as i wanted at a single site. And since I didn’t plan any snack breaks so an hour was enough for me to capture the targeted location.

Since I’m not a good photographer :face_with_hand_over_mouth: so usually focus on map editing when I’m out. And pictures are my target when Im on a trip. So I made the edits at the spot and luckily got the approvals in just minutes.

Would you be kind enough to elaborate what do you mean by WORKFLOW. As its my 1st writeup about a map edit meetup so I’m pretty much sure I have missed things :expressionless:

BTW will it be helpful to share the meetup link in the recap as its already done ?

Hi @MSulaiman

Thanks so much for your reply.

By workflow I mean how we organize our work as a local guide. Some people upload while on-site others do it differently. I think it is important to also share how we organize our work as an inspiration to other local guides.

So the workflow is not related to meep-up or recaps of meet-ups.

I remember how LG @TorM earlier shared how he organizes his photo walks and saves the photos to be uploaded later. And he uses some nice tricks to help him remember where he starts and ends a photo walk. He also marks turns by uploading a single anchor photo to google maps every time his route makes a major turn. You can read about his workflow here.

Do you have plans for more auto-accessibility-meet-ups? If so, what would you plan to do to attract more participants?

Cheers

Morten

@MortenCopenhagen wow that’s a great post. thanks for sharing that.

Definitely, I’m gonna host more meetups on accessibility in the future. As far as participation is concerned, this is something we do it for our community so a simple reminder would be enough for a person who wants to contribute. Currently, I do not have any out of the box plans but I will still be doing a couple of more Accessibility Car Drive meetups in the near future.

Cheers :slightly_smiling_face:
