Reading Terminal Market: The Best Public Market in Metro Philadelphia

My favorite place on Google Maps is the Reading Terminal Market located in Center City, Philadelphia, PA. The market is one of the largest and oldest public markets in the nation which started in 1893. It’s a historic culinary hub for eclectic foods and goods. When I first moved to Philadelphia several years ago, I asked local people where the public market is located, where I can find fresh produce, meats, desserts and more. I was told to go to the Reading Terminal Market and boy was I in for a treat! They have everything from donuts, smoothies, cheesesteaks, seafood, cheese, produce, cookbooks, ice cream, artistic buys, and several eateries. The eatery my wife and I enjoy the most is Hershel’s East Side Deli. They have the best oven-roasted corned beef, pastrami, brisket and turkey breast sandwiches layered with a mound of meat with freshly baked rye bread and all the fixings. Whenever I shop there (which is weekly) I’m bringing home at least 2 sandwiches for my wife and I. I picked up produce from Iovine Brothers, a couple of donuts from Beiler’s, a baguette from Metropolitan Bakery, meats from Guinta’s, and some cannoli’s from Termini Brother’s Bakery. You really get the true vibe of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania’s history of food culture. It embraces the strong Dutch and Quaker influence from centuries past up to the modern-day hustle and bustle of diverse city culture with the immigrant communities from all around the world. I can go there every day and find something new to try and purchase.
