The bathing culture dates back centuries here in Japan but has slowly started to fad in recent years. Public interest in public bathing has waned in recent years due to changing demographics, and it’s largely because the locals can bathe at home and enjoy greater privacy. The stigma now that is associated with public bathing is that it is for the elderly, and only on occasion do young people enjoy visiting their local bathhouses.
Back when I first moved here, I had spent close to a decade photo documenting the rise and decline in public interest in bathing. Ten years ago there was a super sento boom that swept through the Kanto region of Japan. Municipalities were investing millions into building modern bathhouses with state - of - the art facilities. No longer the old-style communal bath feel, but more of a luxury feel with individual baths and bubble tubs. Restaurants were new additions where you could enjoy a nice meal after bathing, along with Japanese sake and cold beer. The bathing experience has evolved a lot since yesteryears.

Since about 5 years ago pizza in Japan has steadily been evolving into real pizza, not the squid mucous pizza many of the locals love. The locals enjoy a lot of very strange and unheard of toppings on pizza, but lately have been keeping it real and authentic. If and when you visit Japan, try Pizza Slice.

Western Classic fused with Japanese aesthetic is married perfectly here. Come to enjoy authentic rice blends with exceptional meals. I put many of these places on the map for a GOOD reason.
