Kashi, or Varanasi, is revered as the eternal city of Shiva, yet holds sacred significance for all Hindu deities. Mentioned in ancient texts and praised by Agastya Muni, it has been a spiritual nucleus for millennia. The city is associated with the Buddha’s miraculous crossing of the Ganga after enlightenment, and it is also the birthplace of Veerangana Lakshmi Bai near Manikarnika Ghat. The legacy of Guru Ravidas and the musical mastery of Bismillah Khan continue to define its cultural pulse.
Varanasi’s riverfront ghats, developed by various Hindu kings, are architecturally and religiously significant. Among them, Rana Mahal Ghat stands out with its grandeur and royal history. It was built in the late 17th century by the Mewar dynasty, whose ruler Maharana Jagat Singh resided in the palace above during his visits.
The stunning palace, in traditional Rajasthani style, still belongs to the Udaipur Estate Trust. Below it, the ghat was designed with stone steps descending into the Ganga and spacious platforms for rituals. Strategically located between Darbhanga and Chausathi Ghats, it offers an uninterrupted view of Varanasi’s sacred skyline.
Whether seen from a boat under the moon’s glow or visited by road, Rana Mahal Ghat embodies the confluence of history, devotion, and artistry, preserving the royal imprint on Varanasi’s eternal spiritual landscape.
