The Ramoji Film City in India is located on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Built by legendary film producer Ramoji Rao in 1996, it is Spread over 1600 acres and is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest studio complex in the world.
The motto of the film studios is “Walk in with the script and walk out with the canned film”.
The top attraction of the Ramoji Film City is the various sets and a tram tour takes you through several familiar locations, such as a railway station, shops, and bazaars, airport, a police station, a government building, a mansion a vegetable market, and even a jail. Here’s the most visited attraction of the Ramoji Studios - the Central Jail. It looks like a real jail from outside.
And also from the inside, it shows how a real prison looks like. It is a moment of laughter and thrill when the tour guide declares “You are among the first people to enter a jail without having committed a crime” aboard the tram that takes you through a metal arch with the words ‘Central Jail’ written on it.
Inside the jail complex, dummy prison robots shake the bars of the jail doors simulating an impending prison break.
Hindi films like Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan, The Dirty Picture, Krish 3, Dilwale, Ra One, Chandramukhi, Bahubali, and also Hollywood productions like Beeper and Quicksand, were all filmed on the sets of the Ramoji Film City.
There are replicas of all sorts of real and imagined things inside the largest film studio complex on the planet.
Here’s a street that leads to a railway station. It looks like a real place with a retro look and feel.
In the above photo, note the billboards which are given a look and feel of a used billboard and are up for rent with the contact number written on it.
Here’s the view just outside the station where one would deboard from the car or tonga carts in the olden days. You can see from the outside that your train has arrived.
This railway station set is where films such as Chennai Express and Ranna were shot.
And this is the platform complete with a real railway engine and the compartments.
Finally, here’s the tram that takes you around the various film sets in the film city and has large open windows for a closeup and immersive experience.
