Raja Ices has a tradition of 75 years, serving fresh hand-made ice cream to several generations in Pune.
Vidyadhar Limaye, the owner, told me that his father started this business even before he was born.
He also showed me the pot apparatus that was used traditionally to prepare the ice cream. Hence this is also famously calel the pot ice cream.
Very few vendors in Pune now produce the pot ice cream. Raja Ices is one of them. The other ones I know of and recently visited are the Khatri Bandu Ice Cream outlets.
Mr. Limaye proudly keeps the family tradition alive and runs the business presently.
Stepping into Raja Ices was like stepping back in time when I visited here last week.
I tried the Anjeer Figs ice cream. The flavors were rich and creamy. I remember this because we used to hire the ice cream-making pots on rent and prepare ice cream at house parties in the 80s.
Here are their rate charts and other information.
Nostalgia Thank you @TravellerG for asking this.
The Ice Pots seen in the photo below - we used to hire them at home.
Then made our ice cream - back in the 80s
That is nostalgic, since the flavors that these produce cannot be recreated using any other means.
Also, note this notice in their shop in Marathi.
It says, “We will prepare ice cream for you as per order. Kindly bring milk between 9 am to 10 am only.”
This was also a prevalent practice until the late 80s when ice could be ordered from shops by providing them milk from our home. They would deliver the ice cream of the desired flavor.
This was because fridges at home were not common in the 80s, at least in Maharashtra. And also ice cream parlors were not everywhere. It was difficult to find a ice cream parlor. public transport was not available the whole day and not in every part of the city.
This added up, resulting in people getting their ice cream prepared as per order for house parties.
They claimed the lemongrass ice cream as a specialty since one won’t find it anywhere else in Pune. This business is truly local or #DilSeLocal as @AjitThite would love to call it.
And their Bajirao Mastani is a masterpiece in a glass, though I haven’t tried it yet. They only offered me a small taste as a preview. The texture was creamy, the flavor was authentic, and the experience was nostalgic for me.
When you are in Pune and craving the best Mastani ice cream, Raja Ices in Sadashiv Peth, Bajirao Road is the place to be.
