Raja Ices in Pune - Beat the Heat with Flavors and Nostalgia

Raja Ices has a tradition of 75 years, serving fresh hand-made ice cream to several generations in Pune.

Vidyadhar Limaye, the owner, told me that his father started this business even before he was born.

He also showed me the pot apparatus that was used traditionally to prepare the ice cream. Hence this is also famously calel the pot ice cream.

Very few vendors in Pune now produce the pot ice cream. Raja Ices is one of them. The other ones I know of and recently visited are the Khatri Bandu Ice Cream outlets.

Mr. Limaye proudly keeps the family tradition alive and runs the business presently.

Stepping into Raja Ices was like stepping back in time when I visited here last week.

I tried the Anjeer Figs ice cream. The flavors were rich and creamy. I remember this because we used to hire the ice cream-making pots on rent and prepare ice cream at house parties in the 80s.

Here are their rate charts and other information.

Nostalgia Thank you @TravellerG for asking this.

The Ice Pots seen in the photo below - we used to hire them at home.
Then made our ice cream - back in the 80s
That is nostalgic, since the flavors that these produce cannot be recreated using any other means.

Also, note this notice in their shop in Marathi.
It says, “We will prepare ice cream for you as per order. Kindly bring milk between 9 am to 10 am only.”

This was also a prevalent practice until the late 80s when ice could be ordered from shops by providing them milk from our home. They would deliver the ice cream of the desired flavor.

This was because fridges at home were not common in the 80s, at least in Maharashtra. And also ice cream parlors were not everywhere. It was difficult to find a ice cream parlor. :plus: public transport was not available the whole day and not in every part of the city.

This added up, resulting in people getting their ice cream prepared as per order for house parties.

They claimed the lemongrass ice cream as a specialty since one won’t find it anywhere else in Pune. This business is truly local or #DilSeLocal as @AjitThite would love to call it.

And their Bajirao Mastani is a masterpiece in a glass, though I haven’t tried it yet. They only offered me a small taste as a preview. The texture was creamy, the flavor was authentic, and the experience was nostalgic for me.

When you are in Pune and craving the best Mastani ice cream, Raja Ices in Sadashiv Peth, Bajirao Road is the place to be.

I tried their lemon grass flavour ice cream on my last visit to Pune & it was an absolute delight. That’s one unique thing which makes me want to revisit Pune again.

This is indeed unique and good that they are continuing with this process.

No wonder to see your love for Anjeer Figs @TusharSuradkar as I too always go for this flavour whenever I visit Naturals.

Wow..! that is amazing @Jiraiya.boy
I come to know about this flavor only in reviews and videos because they did not talk about it when I visited there.
Maybe next time :+1:

Are you visiting Pune again soon? We have meetups out here regularly and would invite you to attend.

Yes, nothing like experiencing the slow and charming days of the 80s and 90s in today’s busy world @ShreyaMusings such opportunities have become lesser now.

Anjeer Figs is a benchmark flavor to compare quality and richness for me @Kumaarsantosh

This one was among the best so far :ice_cream: :face_savoring_food:

Let’s explore a nearby ice cream shop during the upcoming Delhi meetup :handshake:

Yes, same here. When I checked it’s reviews ,many had recommended lemon grass flavour. And I didn’t hesitated to try it out due to its uniqueness.
I’ll definitely let you know on my next visit to Pune. I would like to join your meet-ups.

Ohh… dear @TusharSuradkar
Okay, I got it…
Decades back in rural Kerala, a cycle-wala (with a bell) used to bring Kulfi and we all used to have it… don’t remember the price…
Thanks for your response…
Sincerely

That’s seriously cool. :sparkles: Stepping into a place like that must instantly transport you, totally unlocking those specific 80s home-party, hired-pot ice cream memories.
