Queenstown the true paradise for adventurers

July 2014, I was on my way to Queenstown, one of the famous town in New Zealand and perhaps in the world. It is so nostalgic to think about the greatest memory there 6 years ago.The scenic view from Lake Tekapo till Queenstown was around 8hours en route and I couldn’t close my eyes - they were like painting. It was one of the greatest experience I have ever felt and the best road trip I have ever taken.

I think many people search for Queenstown on Google. Queenstown is the gem of New Zealand, just like Angkor Wat is for Cambodia.

Fun facts about Queenstown - 100% pure New Zealand:

What are there?

  • Either Summer, Autumn or winter, Queenstown has different charms and colors.
  • Queenstown can be accessed by road or flights.
  • The paradise for its well-known ski resort at South Hemisphere.
  • En route from Christchurch, you will cross 3 biggest lakes in NZ.
  • The most scenic city in the world, tip is to take a Skyline gondola ride up (the steepest cable car lift in Southern hemisphere) - there is a 360 degree restaurant up there, see the view either day time or night time, both worth it. Be young again taking the thrilling Luge.
  • The city that has the best burger in the world - Fergburger (featured by CNN). If you are a burger fan, do not forget to include this in your trip.
  • The city is home to adventure where all adventurous activities can be done, counting from star gazing or southern light viewing - Aurora Australis (under cold weather), ziplining, skiing, snow boarding, heli-skiing, caving, Bungy jumping, rock hanging, canyoning, climbing, abseiling or rappelling, rafting, paragliding, sky diving, jet boating.
  • There is actually a place name paradise in this town
  • Ski field: The Remarkables (faces with the city), Coronet Peak Ski Area, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone Ski Area, Soho Basin

Recommendation:

  • Be sure to book for an accommodation in advanced (often full in Winter).
  • There are more to explore! There are many places which you should not miss when you are there, e.g. Milford Sound, Arrow Town, Glenorchy, Lake Wanaka (a bit far)
  • Keep in mind that you can hire a minivan or camper van and drive yourself if you can (extremely easy and available), able to explore more places
  • Best to go as couples, families - the most picturesque city so take your time for photo shooting
  • For skiing, best to buy a package tour (extremely easy, available and safer)
  • Road trip from Christchurch to Queenstown is highly recommended, you can flight out to other cities after your trip.
  • If you are not a budget traveler, try Scenic Flight over Queenstown and its ski field or Skydiving over the city.

  • @fasi6083 I’m very happy to learn that you also enjoyed this town. It is actually very famous among middle class Chinese and Indian visitors. Skiers I met are from many parts of the world and the instructors are here for the job, mostly from Europe and Americas. So, they traveled around the world for that.*

  • @Rohan10 thank you for such beautiful comments. You are right, virtual tour actually gives such feeling - I kept surfing them in the net. 6 years already and I still dreamt about this place. The best feeling is to start seeing icy mountain along the way. I did not believe it was actually ice. I thought it is salt. All the way from Lake Tekapo, you will see layers of mountains and sometimes a flock of sheep and sometimes the milky cows… against the icy mountain. When arrived the town, everyone was carrying skis or board… which was like another planet or paradise since you never seen it in your life. What an experience!*

  • @Ant_Bad_Yogi thank you my dear. I did feel that too. Compared to its neighboring country, Australia, NZ is actually very tiny but I believe it has its own charms. QT is one example. I couldn’t believe I have seen it.*

@helga19 thank you dear Inna. I’m overwhelmed to learn that you enjoyed it. Actually, I don’t like long contents except when it is necessary. Emerald lakes against the icy mountain is very interesting. I remember that @AdamGT told me it is comparable to Canada except for Canada a thousand times bigger than NZ.

@LuigiZ thank you! If you frequently travel to Australia, I think there’s a direct flight to and from Queenstown. You can try next time. Just the city alone awed me, let alone other activities and some attraction nearby… I would really love to go again.
