Purmamarca is one of the most picturesque towns that the Quebrada de Humahuaca has. Its name means in Quechua, “town of the lion”
Purmamarca is located more than 2,300 meters above sea level. For some people, this can lead to so-called altitude sickness or “aiming.”
Some ways to avoid it are: chewing coca leaves or eating coca candy, drinking plenty of water, avoiding heavy meals and alcohol.
It is just over an hour’s drive north of San Salvador de Jujuy and 30 minutes south of Tilcara, on National Route 52.
The most famous one stands out, which has even popularized the city that shelters it: the Cerro de los 7 Colores. It bears that name due to the different pigmentations that the minerals that form its walls acquire. This hill is part of the Cordillera Oriental and is located immediately west of the population center of Purmamarca. Its best view is achieved from the main road that we take after leaving Route 9 to enter its surroundings.
Plaza 9 de Julio is the main plaza of Purmamarca.
Around it, you can find street stalls of food, crafts, textiles and also several restaurants, cafes and historical buildings.
This is an ideal place to buy a souvenir or gift from Purmamarca.
One of the things we liked most about the town was walking through these colorful streets, contemplating the impressive landscapes in the background.
Spectacular!

Saludos.
