🌉 Punalur Suspension Bridge – A Piece of Living History

The Punalur Suspension Bridge, built in 1877, is one of Kerala’s oldest and most unique landmarks. Designed by British engineer Albert Henry. This bridge was a game-changer for trade and travel, connecting pathanapuram and kollam across the Kallada River.

What Makes It Special is that, it was one of the first suspension bridges in South India. Its design allowed it to sway slightly, which kept wild animals from crossing into town. A clever touch that shows how engineering can blend with nature.

It’s no longer used for heavy traffic, the bridge is preserved as a historical site. Walking across it today offers a glimpse into Kerala’s past and the innovation of the time. It’s open 24/7. It’s wheelchair accessible :wheelchair:. It’s few kms away from my home .

@bonnythomas it is interesting, the bridge is constructed using steel bars and wood and the pillers are made with rocks all the way to the top.

@Gouri_S_Prakash , It was constructed by the British, in the same architectural methods they use to built the bridges in Britain

@Shaunak , the bridge has a good view too, in the morning you can see fog in the river and around the bridge.
In the evening there is a reading club were few people come to sit on the benches placed on the bridge and read books.

@SarathUpendran Beautiful architecture of a historical bridge. Very few suspension bridges exist now and even fewer where efforts are being done to conserve it. The ploy to keep out the wild animals is simply incredible. Thank you for sharing a great part of history close to your home

@Ssiddharth2000 , it is … there are few canals and Aquaductis constructed around the same time the bridge was built. I will share them later.
