Problem for moving POIs

Hello,

Since about 10 days ago, when I try to move one POI, after a few hours I receive the approval email. This is normal.

But when I check the place on the map I see there is no change in the location. Even after some days, the POI remains in the wrong location.

Did anyone experience such a problem, too?

Is there any changes to the editing locations?

Hi @Amiran

It may help if you could be a little more specific. Is the business claimed? When you say moved, did you move the map pointer, or are we talking about correcting an address or move of the business to another location?

Let’s guide and be guided.

Warm regards, JeroenM

Hello dear @JeroenM

Yes, thanks for reminding about telling about the details. The places I want to move aren’t claimed.

And I’m discussing all kinds of movings!

No matter if I just move the pointer, Correct the address only, Request for moving the business to another location (both location and address at the same time), I receive approval email but it has no real effect on the map and the POIs still have their previous status!

This information is already helpful, @Amiran , because at least we know that you are not “battling” with the owner.
Since you are talking about multiple cases, it is kind of interesting that you would receive the Applied and then find that nothing is happening on Google Maps.

You would almost think that there is a second filter that kicks in after the algorithm first approved your edit. However, having a #SherlockHolmsMoment (LOL) here, I have some further questions for you.

  1. You don’t have an offline downloaded map to safe mobile data for your area, right? Because that would, of course, explain why you keep looking at an outdated map.
  2. Have you also tried to open Google Maps Incognito, to see if things look different?
  3. Did you notice that the points you earned with your successful edit were subtracted?
  4. Do the wrong locations show up simply by zooming in on the area, or do you have to actively search for the places?

Personally, I have also had the experience that edit was approved, but that the removed places would still show up on the search. My theory in those cases was that perhaps Google is sometimes trying to be economic with its computing resources and keeping cache files for your particular search and only once in a while update/ remove those outdated cache files. So in other words, the Google Maps that you see when zooming in and zooming out is more up to date than the POI that shows up when you use search. It is a theory that I derived from a similar experience as described in point 4 above and based on my little computer/internet knowledge.

That’s nice to have a deeper look at this issue.

  1. Currently (since some months ago) I have no offline maps on my phone. And I’m only using the map online so it should show the latest edits. Moreover, I also experience this issue on desktop and it is not a device-based issue.

  2. I tested it and in incognito mode, the places are still at a previous status.

  3. In fact, I never check my points so accurately and I can’t even check it. Because I continuously do edits and many pending edits get approval every day so, in normal times, the points only increase even if I miss some points, too. But by your advice, I try to stop other contributions for somewhile and check it accurately.

  4. Both, No matter if I search or zoom, the moved POIs are still at wrong locations.

It seems that the system sends a fake approval email  and in fact, my edits to change the locations are not applied.

I just hope this issue be a temporary behavior of the system and in the next weeks it reverts back to normal status.

Hi @Amiran ,

Thanks for checking out all the things I suggested. Please, remember to tag me as I was not aware that you had gotten back to me. I am tagging @JanVanHaver and @NABILazeez , as they are both masters in Map Editing and think they would be interested. I have another Map Editing friend that I don’t need to tag, because he reads everything on LGC (you know who you are, good new friend).

It seems there might be indeed a technical issue/ bug in the system as I found a similar report that Google is currently looking into. They may wish your story as well, to better analyze the issue.

Check this out:

I am tagging @MortenSI to make sure that the Local Guides Team is aware of this potential bug and so that internal reporting can be executed when necessary.

@Amiran

my dear brilliant friend , I always find your issues very interesting .

as our friend @JeroenM asked some intelligent questions that I wanted to ask , so I will ask one remaining one

the question is :

are you saving this poi at your saved places ( want to go - lists - following - visited or labeled ) ???

if so please unsaved it and clean cached file and check if the issue solved

I am waiting for your comment

best wishes my dear friend

Thank you dear @JeroenM for following up on this issue. And sorry because I’ve forgotten to tag you in the previous response.

Thank you so much, my dear @NABILazeez

No, I didn’t save the place. I’m aware that saved places are shown on their previous status.

It should be told that the “applied email” is wrong and in fact, no changes happened to the POI.

I should also tell that I’ve tested this for many places in different categories and the problem exists. I also asked @SamanS to test it and in some cases, he also experienced the same. It seems a system issue but I hope it to be resolved asap.

It would be good if you also test this and move some places to the correct location and let us know the result.

Dear @NABILazeez ,

I am intrigued by your question. Whilst I fully understand that saved places have an impact on what you as an individual get to see on your Map, I don’t understand how this could have an impact on what happens in Incognito Mode or is seen by other users.

Thank you @Amiran for your response to @NABILazeez . I just learned something about the issue of a saved place that I was not aware of. Thank you Nabil for mentioning it here, so I could learn (hahaha).

I agree with you, @Amiran , this looks like a bug and since there is at least one supporting case on the product forum, I think you have a point. Let’s wait for a Google Moderator to get back to us.

Yes @JeroenM ,

@NABILazeez mentioned the status of saved places (which shows what was at the time of saving the place) for the user himself not for other users or from the incognito mode.

And Yes, it Seems we should wait for a Google Moderator to check back-end for this issue. Till that it would be good if other users also share their experiences in this case.

@Amiran

so you are sure that there is error anywhere similar that we faced in the last few months .

so if you please give me an example to try by myself to check if this issue happened to Iranian LG or IRAN maps only or any LG can face this issue from any country .

please give the poi and its right position and lets continue our adventure if you want or wait for google moderator help …

Yes @NABILazeez , I’m sure this is an error of system but as you said not sure is it related to Iran or not.

For example,

this pharmacy should be moved to the building

this job agency should be moved to its correct location

this heritage building should be moved to correct location

this company should be moved to the correct location for merging with its duplicate

Or the bigger one, this subway station (which is nearly different because it is on the transit layer but in Iran editing is the only way to fix) should be moved to correct location

Thanks for your try and help

Earlier this year, when there was so much turmoil with relation to LG contributions and related points, I experienced something similar: map marker edits getting approved, confirmation email received… but no change on the map, also not after several days. Around that same period, I also had comparable issues with POI names.

But the issue went away eventually (several weeks if I remember well). And at this moment I am not facing the issue. Even a POI where I moved the map marker just a couple of hours ago is already shown at the correct location (I checked a few recent edits and all were fine)

Hello and many thanks for sharing your experience dear @JanVanHaver , Yes, My issue is also what you’ve experienced.

This is valuable for me and decreases my concern in this case. So now we know this is not something related to one area and it happened before.

This brings a different meaning to APPROVED but NOT APPLIED

Besides the other Product Forum post that I already shared, I could find more examples, but none were definite and thus not escalated. Sadly, a lot of users that report their issue, do not provide a screen-shot of their email that is required to escalate the matter.

One product expert said to wait 2 weeks after your edit approval, before reporting anything. This would definitely make our checking to duplicate the issue something that may take some time.

@Amiran

The same as yours .

Not applied at Egypt.

Waiting for clarification .
