Problem about Road name editing and adding.

Since the introduction of Google maps road addition facility in Bangladesh, I have tried to add some roads with road name. But after receiving the publication email, I could not see any name of those roads on the map.

Caption: Photo 1 - When I try to add correct line of the road (red marked), I entered the name Haibatnagar - Harua Road. After publication there is no name.

Caption: Photo 2 - When I was adding the road, I entered its name ‘Railway Underpass’. But there is no name.

Same problem I have faced when I edit an unnamed road with its name. After approved, I didn’t see any name of the road in Google Maps.

Caption: Photo 3 - I edited the unnamed roads name Morjal - Belabo Road. I also gave the road code in additional information section. But there is no name.

I have added some roads where I did not give any name while adding the road, but after the publication I can see the name of that road.

Caption: Photo 4 - I didn’t give any name of the road as far as I remember. But It is showing a name মুক্তমঞ্চ রোড (Muktomoncho Road).

Once I saw a signboard and gave the name of a road but ‘not applied’.

My question is, what is the system to publish the name of the road in the map? How does Google determine the name of the road? What to do if I want to show the name of the road on the map?

Hi @ReazulIslamDolan

I can’t answer all your questions. But let me share some background.

In many regions Google Maps is based on official local maps provided by the local authorities.

Some local authorities demand Google not allow Maps users make changes to the map. So if changes are to be implemented there need to be some good proof / documents supporting the changes.

This is why we need to attach official documentation when asking Google staff to make such changes via the Maps Support forum.

And sometines it is Google who refuse to make such edits without proper documentation that they can archive as proof for each and every change they make.

Just because it was made easier to suggest such edits might collide with the need for documentation.

Since I don’t have access to the new and improved road tool on Desktop I can not help you with the specific questions you raised. And I’m not familiar with how easily or hard it is to get changes approved in your country.

Maybe @ErmesT can help you further. Or sone of your fellow countrymen can.

Cheers

@MortenCopenhagen your comment was informative. Thanks for your information. Could you please tell me more about new improved road tool on desktop? Is it more improved than mobile version? Is this Road mapper which you are talking about?

Hi @ReazulIslamDolan

You can read about the new desktop tool to add roads here.

The Road Mapper is very different as you can not freely chose where to add roads. All maps sections are pre selected for you.

Unfortunately I have no insight about naming a road, but I know that Google is always using public data from a lot of different sources, as you can read in this post about data related to listings: How Google sources and uses information in local listings

I had no issues about adding Road names, and to have them displayed. However I think that some of the names suggested by you seem to be a bit “Creative”, @ReazulIslamDolan : is “Railway Underpass” the real name of that road? This seems to be a description about what is the road for, not the real name of the road.

For a better feedback, I am tagging @Flash in this post

Regarding Road Editor for Desktop, the functionalities are the same that you have on mobile, but it is easier to use thanks to the mouse and the big screen. The way to add roads is the same of Road Mapper, but in Road Editor you can also define the Type of road and the Road name (if available). For more details you can read: Roads for Everyone - Helping others with the New Road Editor

Thank you @ErmesT for tagging me in.

@ReazulIslamDolan , Ernest is correct, the name field is meant only for actual names and not descriptions.

This applies to all name fields for all features. Not only should you not use the description of “Railway Underpass” in a road’s name field, but you also shouldn’t use a description of “Parking Lot”, “Swimming Beach”, or “Park” for other features on the map. The name field is always meant to contain the proper name only for all features. You also shouldn’t combine descriptive elements into names, for example it is “McDonald’s” and not “McDonald’s Hamburger Restaurant - Long Beach”.

The difference for roads and places is that it is OK to have an unnamed road, but if a place doesn’t have a proper name then it shouldn’t be mapped.
