Pre-Broadway Premiere | The Wiz

Golden Gate Theater in the heart of the Tenderloin district downtown San Francisco

This performing arts center was the local place to be during this Pre-Broadway premiere. The historical landmark still has much of its original architecture in place making it an architect lovers gold mine.

I got there early to take in all the historical glory this treasure holds. Lots of beautiful gold crown molding to see around the facility. The reception area has limited seating good for people watching. It was here that they also had a bar with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase as well as snacks like popcorn, nuts and gummi bears. They also had a stand set up to purchase keepsake souvenirs like t-shirts and programs before and after the performance. The staff was pretty friendly when answering questions. This modern-day remake of a timeless theatrical performance was truly brought to life by the cast. I could feel the passion in each song as it was sung by the different performers from my seat which happened to unfortunately be near the back of this landmark. You could often hear other audience members enthusiasticly belting out the words from the hit songs complete with finger snapping and hands waving in the air right along with the characters performing. The live orchestra playing under the stage helped make this a memorable event. The pageantry of all the costumes worn during the performance helped make the set look very real. Lots of vivid colors also helped bring the stage to life transporting each person in the audience to that magical place called “The Wiz”.

The Cast

Dorthy’s character was played by Nichelle Lewis who really brought a modern flare to this personality.

The “Scarecrow” character was brought to life with lots of spunk and pizazz by Avery Wilson

The Lion character was performed with lots of flare by Kyle Ramar

The Tinman character was hilariously brought to life by Phillip Johnson Richardson

OMG. “The Wiz” was played by the one and only Emmy award-winning Wayne Brady

To sum things up, this revival of the 1970’s hit I watched as a kid is well worth a trip to your local theater. An absolute must-see for live theater lovers. Have you seen it yet? Planning on seeing it? Share your thoughts in the comments below. You can check out my review here. Until next time…
