Post-Connect Live 2018: 2nd Annual Sailing the SF Bay Meetup

One of the many memorable, fun things to do in San Francisco is to go sailing on a sailboat in the San Francisco Bay. There is nothing like it! Gliding across The Bay with fresh wind blowing through your hair, you can see the iconic Golden Gate Bridge with the Pacific Ocean at a distance, Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco skyline, including Pier 39.

During the Friday afternoon after Local Guides Summit 2017 ended, I hosted for the first time a “Sail the San Francisco Bay” Meetup to give 35 LGSummit17 attendees the opportunity to go on a sailboat and experience what sailing is like around The Bay for 90 minutes.

Starting with a group lunch of eating Boudin Bakery’s famous clam chowder sourdough bread bowls, then walking over to Pier 39 to catch our private charter sailboat, we had so much fun that I wanted to set up this Sailing Tour meetup again as soon I received my Connect Live 2018 invitation.

I wanted to pick the same day and same 90-minute Sail Tour with the same Sailing Tour company - The San Francisco Sailing Company - for the Friday, October 19th, 2018 2 pm Tour with the same 36 passengers sailboat, the Santa Maria, because the 2017 meetup was so much fun.

This shared 650+ Google Photos album consists of photos, 360s, and videos from some of the 36 Connect Live 2018 Local Guides attendees who paid for their Sail the SF Bay tickets to attend my 2nd Annual “Powered by us, Local Guides” meetup. The images you see in here are from their individual viewpoints of that beautiful, sunny October afternoon.

To give you a feel of what it was like to go sailing with us in the San Francisco Bay, I created a YouTube video with a curated compilation of meetup photos and video clips (NOTE: There is music!) from our shared Google Photos album:

I will be setting up the 3rd Annual “Sailing the San Francisco Bay” Local Guides Meetup again in 2019

Thank you @KarenVChin for organising the Sailing tour after Connect Live, one of the best activity, on a beautiful Friday

It was funny, and the smiles on the photo will confirm it for sure. It is a quite big Gif, so be patient as it need time to load. Here is the direct link to the Gif

Excellent recap and excellent post, @KarenVChin - such great memories that my eyes even teared up reading through and watching the video. It was such a great experience and I was so glad to have taken part last year! Even still recovering from the previous night’s karaoke, it was still a great time.

Thanks so much for making it happen and thanks to everyone else on board who made it a time to remember!

Fantastic recap @KarenVChin !! So lovely to be reminded of this sailing trip especially with the dreaded wintry cold weather that we have now in Manchester, UK!! I love being on water despite my fear of swimming in open seas, so it was a really super cool event!!!

@ErmesT , nice! I do remember you and many others taking candid photos of each of us during that wonderful, warm sunny day. It just goes to show how many Local Guides can be having a great, fun time together one afternoon if given the chance.

@MahabubMunna , I remember this moment! Hope to do this with you soon again.

By the way, I never realized how tall you are and how short I really am. = ) Was happy to spend time with you here and another time pre-Connect Live. Do you remember this photo? Oh, what a night with @SoniaK and @AnuradhaP . I will never forget this one. = )

@FaridTDF , glad you had a wonderful time.! I agree the wind does feel wonderful as it hits you! We did have some great warm breezes that day. At times, we were really “floating” above water.

I didn’t realize this was your first time sailing. I thought you did this at home. I would imagine Argentina has some great sailing.

Definitely, get ready for 2019. I am looking forward to sailing again. Makes me happy! = )

Cheers,

Karen

@KhamphoutS , thanks for your kind words.

Don’t worry. sailing is happening again. It’s quite addicting and I love doing and sharing this “only in San Francisco” experience. I had many of the LGSummit17 alumni wanting to sail again last October.

Cheers,

Karen

@SP31 , happy to read you had a blast, both sailing and karaoke (did not realize we had so many karaoke singers in our group!). Definitely, two things I will be planning for 2019! Mark your calendar for these two.

@davidhyno , thanks for your kind words. You make me blush!

Sailing the San Francisco Bay is one of those “only in San Francisco” experiences - we get close to seeing Alcatraz, taking in the spectacular beauty of both the SF Oakland Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge, and the incredible San Francisco skyline.

Happy that you were able to join us for the Clean The World: Connect Live 2018 Edition. @ErmesT and I will be doing that again at The Presidio this year. So mark your calendar for these possible “Only in San Francisco” Local Guides meetup opportunities.

Cheers,

Karen

@AdrianLunsong , thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed the photos and video.

I didn’t realize you had a fear of water. Luckily, it was not too windy that day because The Bay can get really choppy. The sailboat would be definitely doing some Matrix moves over water. = )

I hate to tell you - today it was 65F (18C), bright blue skies with puffy white clouds, warm and sunny. Felt like spring!

En Argentina tenemos una gran costa Atlántica y en particular Ushuaia tiene muchos veleros en sus muelles @KarenVChin , pero era mi mi primera vez en navegar en un velero

@KarenVChin I don’t mind being on a boat/ferry… but the thought of an accident and trying to float in open waters is frightening. On beach holidays, I definitely keep to shallow waters; I remember swimming once and I could see through my googles that the sandy floor went from nice and shallow to a sudden huge drop where it was essentially an ‘abyss’ of darkness… and I could feel the tendrils of cold water from the deep end pulling at me… urrgh… still sends chills thinking about it!

On a summer camp job in Maine, I had to swim out to a buoy in a fresh water lake as part of a test that would allow me to get allocated to water sports activities. I could not see the bottom (murky and muddy) and it absolutely freaked me out! It took me many, many tries (and a year actually… I came back the second year determined to pass) before I did it!

Once I’m in a life vest… I’m okay-ish. It’s just that I really don’t float and I’m not a very strong swimmer (chalk it down to asthma as a kid!) so yeah… S. C. A. R. Y. But other than that, I absolutely love being close to water or on a very secure boat!
