Portugal? EU point much closer to USA

Cabo da Roca, the most western point of the whole European continent, the one closest to America is a 140 meter high cliff that sinks steeply into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, located in the Municipality of Sintra, in Portugal, precisely in the surroundings of Colares. Once arrived, the eyes are captured by an imposing red and white lighthouse (still working) “lying” on a shining green bed. In the background, only the horizon line that separates the sea from the sky! Behind the cliff stands a large monument where, in addition to the geographical coordinates, there is a phrase written by the poet Luís Vaz de Camões, in a poem of the poem “Os Lusiadas”: “Aqui … onde terra se acaba eo mar começa” Here … where the earth ends and the sea begins. Wonderful

Hey @CarmineDpC ,

The view is amazing! I always prefer the seaside to the mountain. By the way, I wonder what the view would be like from on top of the lighthouse. Have you tried that?

Wow! Really nice photos and really beautiful place @CarmineDpC . I don’t know if Luís Vaz de Camões’s phrase was inspired by that place but his words describe it perfectly.

Ciao @MoniDi , unfortunately not… no way to entrance into lighthouse because is off limit area (military). You can going closer but non inside… Cabo da Roca extends inside the Natural Park of Sintra-Cascais, an immense protected space characterized by a luxuriant variety of flora (pines, oaks and firs) and fauna (raptors, cormorants, peregrine falcons, gulls, foxes and more) where it is possible to follow well marked trails and get in direct contact with nature. The gem: not far from the lighthouse stands the tourist office where you can buy a certificate attesting the transit at the most western point of the entire European continent. The document is nominative and there is a simple format (€ 5.60) or a cover format (€ 11). For blind people there is a certificate written in braille (€ 4.50).
