this winter I specifically purchased an Insta360 X3 with SmartRemote and accessories to exclusively capture StreetView because here, in the national park, the various historical and nature trails are not mapped. I’d like to share with you my impressions of usage and experience with you, along with some tips.
From a technical standpoint, the X3 is a magnificent device. It captures high-quality footage and offers superior image stabilization. It’s definitely worth the investment. I would recommend purchasing lens covers. The main lenses are prone to scratching, and the damage can be irreparable.
Unfortunately, if you encounter any issues, the post-sales and technical support from Insta360 is entirely inefficient. From the very beginning, I’ve highlighted that the SmartRemote has serious connection problems with the camera. It frequently loses connection and fails to reconnect. You’re forced to power it off and on again.
There are also several complaints on their website (insta360.com) from users like us who use the X3 for StreetView. However, the real issue lies in the management of GPS data, which seems to have been resolved now. The Insta360 desktop software was unable to extract GPS data from the created videos, rendering them useless for us! We had to rely on external software to accomplish that. Today, a new version of the desktop software has been released, claiming to extract the data. I will try it tomorrow and let you know. As for the SmartRemote, the support team has no clue about what to do except repeatedly asking if the firmware is up to date. Moreover, on my last trail, it seemed to be working fine, but in the end, I discovered that it hadn’t recorded the GPS data. Even worse, it had only recorded half of it.
I’m equipped with an iPhone 14Pro, MacMini, X3, Smart Remote and 3Meters Stick.
You will be really satisfied buy the X3 but, if you can, buy or test another remote or any device able to record GPS. Ah, you have the same issue is you use your mobile phone.
