Plates to enjoy Madrid in summer

I propose some corners to enjoy Madrid in summer and show that although the sea seems so distant, the summer season is an opportunity to see this great city:

  • Manzanare river: In the heart of the city. Along 7 kilometers and on both banks of the river with the magnificent park of Madrid Rio -that you can cross through multiple walkways- this walk populated with gardens and recreational places for children and adults becomes a more interesting option to enjoy Madrid in summer. And if you want to witness a cultural proposal, you just have to go to Matadero Madrid. In addition, you have at a step such emblematic places as the Royal Palace, the Cathedral of Almudena and the Campo del Moro.

  • The roof of the CĂrculo de Bellas Artes: This is a classic in summer. A meeting point for chill out, a beer, a soft drink or an ice cream or a good meal. Among all of them, we recommend the roof of the CĂrculo de Bellas Artes, in the central Alcalá street and 56 meters high. And you have one of the best panoramic views of the Spanish capital.

  • Retiro Park: Populated by more than 15 thousand trees, this green backwater in the heart of the city also houses numerous architectural and sculptural ensembles. For example, the Palacio de Cristal and the Palacio de Velázquez -which function as exhibition halls-, the Monument to Alfonso XII, the Puerta de Felipe IV, the Royal Astronomical Observatory and the Fuente de la Alcachofa. You can also appreciate the remains of the Romanesque hermitage of San Pelayo and San Isidoro. And, in the Big Pond, you have the possibility of doing recreational sailing, rowing and canoeing.

  • Garden of the Prince of Anglona:Is in the Plaza de la Paja (neighborhood of La Latina). It is one of the few examples of noble gardens of the eighteenth century that are preserved in the area. In its 500 square meters include a granite fountain, a pair of pergolas with roses, a semicircular roundabout and a large number of leafy trees that provide generous shade. Dare to cross the small door of the wall that protects it and you will feel transported to the best of the classic worlds.

-Natural pools of Rascafría: Is a municipality located in the northwest area of the Community of Madrid. There you will meet Las Presillas. It consists of three natural pools in the Lozoya river bed and in the El Paular Valley. It is an ideal place to have a picnic contemplating wide green meadows and also beautiful views of Peñalara, the highest peak of the Sierra de Guadarrama.

-Cascades of Purgatory: Without leaving RascafrĂa, in the central zone of the Sierra de Guadarrama. There is a set of waterfalls located in the AguilĂłn stream. They are not easily accessible, and you must make the way on foot, but the reward is worth it. You can start by visiting the Royal Monastery of Santa MarĂa de El Paular (1390) and, from there, cross the Puente del PerdĂłn and take the old Madrid road. After a detour you will reach a wooden bridge and then a narrow and winding path that leads to a viewpoint located in front of the Baja waterfall. You will refresh yourself with admiring this wonderful show of a vertical waterfall of 10 meters. The most trained can reach, 200 meters higher, the Alta waterfall.

-Los Villares Beach: On the banks of the Tagus River, in the town of Estremera, is this beach surrounded by poplars where you can circumvent the summer heat just 60 kilometers southeast of Madrid. It is ideal to go with children, since it has a playground for children and proposals for different recreational activities both on land and in water. It also has picnic areas, a chiringuito, tables and banks.

  • Alberche Beach:You can also spend a refreshing day with children on the fluvial beach of Alberche, in the municipality of Aldea del Fresno, less than an hour southwest of Madrid. It has generous sandbanks and a good offer of kiosks, services and showers. At the junction of the Alberche River and the Perales, its tributary forms a sufficient flow of water to give you a good bath. In addition, the beach joins the town through a pedestrian promenade.

  • San Juan Reservoir: About 70 kilometers east of the capital is the San Juan Reservoir, the only one in the entire community where it is allowed to bathe and navigate by motor. It presents about 14 kilometers of beaches in the municipalities of San MartĂn de Valdeiglesias, El Tiemblo, Cebreros and Pelayos de la Presa. In addition, its waters hide two historic buildings: a medieval bridge with eight eyes and the ruins of the original hermitage of the Virgen de la Nueva.
