Plagurism & CC0 – Creative Commons images Copyright Clarification Needed

Hey Administrators,

No idea where to post this so trying here.

My event for Thursday has been cancelled.

I received an email (above) saying the image I used doesn’t seem to be my own. Opps…

That’s incorrect. Ownership of non-exclusive imagery is shared. Non exclusive ownership isn’t referred to on the FAQ pages, nor use of CC0 – Creative Commons images that are free to use on on-line forums virtually everywhere.

With reference to the rest the photo was representative of the event (as I have no other prior photos of the thing in itself hence its use). Platforms offering free photo stock, as I read it conform to local guide policies. Indeed the purpose of these sites is to facilitate ease in sharing UGC content. In italics I’ll quote the use of the photo in question.

  • All photos published on Unsplash can be used for free. You can use them for commercial and noncommercial purposes. You do not need to ask permission from or provide credit to the photographer or Unsplash, although it is appreciated when possible.
  • More precisely, Unsplash grants you an irrevocable, nonexclusive, worldwide copyright license to download, copy, modify, distribute, perform, and use photos from Unsplash for free, including for commercial purposes, without permission from or attributing the photographer or Unsplash. This license does not include the right to compile photos from Unsplash to replicate a similar or competing service.

Today now unable to create the event for Thursday with a non-related but the only photo I can use  Bad news for me. I got 6 people to pre-agreed to attend (after a LOT of discussion). Now the event will have to be cancelled. Please can you look into the matter. I hope you can Harry Potter the post back from the Malfory box.

The FAQ pages are not clear on shared or actually copyright free use of imagery or better said CC0 – Creative Commons images. If exclusive copyright is the only permissible thing in itself this should be stated. This will open up a world of pain for this forum mind.

I think the word plagiarism used in the email is incorrect. Use of CC0 is not plagiarism. The terms and conditions do not refer to shared creative commons use that is free to use for Google. For the ownership by and non-exclusive ‘us’ isn’t specified https://policies.google.com/terms#toc-content

Anything you can do to get the event back on would be supercool! The changes with the guidelines and email I guess might take some time.

Sorry if I’ve left any Moderators out I’m trying to remember you all  Don’t bite me if I forgot you!

Hi @Phunky ! Thanks for reaching out. We are trying to do our best in determining whether the photos Local Guides submit on their meet-ups are original or they were downloaded from various sources. However, it is not possible for us to find out the copyright specifics of each individual picture. As mentioned in the article about our policy for original content, a best practice would be to o****nly share photos you have taken yourself or received permission to use directly from the copyright owner.

In this particular case, we encourage you to submit the meet-up again and our team will make sure it goes live. Apologies for any inconveniences this might have caused! :slightly_smiling_face:

@NadyaPN Thanks for your mega prompt reply  I’ve just submitted the event again. If you could change the date to THURSDAY that would ensure we get the intended turnout. Have a fun day!

Hey @Phunky , unfortunately the meet-up needs to be at least 3 days from today and even we can’t change that. Therefore, the earliest date possible is the one you’ve selected. Just so you know, I’ve approved your newly submitted meet-up.

As a general thought @Phunky I would suggest not submitting a meet-up with less than two to three weeks to go before the event as people won’t have enough time to see it and make plans. The earlier you put it in the more likely you are to get people coming along.

Thanks for helping @NadyaPN
