Places to Visit: House of Minalima, London, UK

e London is one of the very few places with free access to many museums. One of them is House of Minalima. It’s not an official museum, to be precised but still.

The people who founded this museum, have actually done all those wonderful concepts you’re about to see below. Even more, the Fantastic Beasts movies have elements designed, drawn and printed by this studio. They have practically, created most of the images of your original Hogwarts library.

What’s so special about this place is the 3 floors of magic and design ideas or secrets, if you’d prefer to call it like that. It’s narrow, it’s hidden … It’s a magical place. Believe it or not, this is the most open to muggles spot of the wizarding world. Our short walk will tell you more and I do hope you will visit.

House of Minalima is a bright building which anyone can easily recognize. The colorful window you will see when entering this place is full of stationery, books and more designs is always related to a movie the Minalima Design studio has worked. I absolutely love the summer related windows. Yup, they even pay attention to the season. It’s always colorful and positive. Entering the old doors, friendly atmosphere of the paper, design and souvenirs shop will welcome you but guys, keep that for the end of your route. Please, use the stairs and follow the Hogwarts letters on each step.

You will see wanted wizard posters, glimpses of the Harry Potter movies and the magnificent Hogwarts crest on a window while climbing to level 1.

The '90s will hit you there along with the good old Hogwarts spirit. Each wall has massive frames with creative posters or concept. Some of the precious small props are behind glass, so that you could take a picture of them under the soft light. There’s also a fireplace with Hogwarts acceptance letters. All of them were unfortunately addressed to Harry Potter. An awesome fact is that all of them were actually printed and filmed during the iconic scene where Harry is trying to catch them in the living-room.

More magic is to follow on the next floor where walls are covered with more frames full of small and large pictures. Each of them took part in the Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts movies. Please be sure to check the floor. There’s a high resolution of the magical equivalent of Google Maps.

Images like the Weasley’s family clock, Black Family tree, Ron’s hauler and Leaky Cauldron will overtake your mind, recalling memories of your magical childhood.

All windows are a bit dusty not because staff is lazy. It’s part of the wizarding world atmosphere. You will also see a chocolate frog or quills on them. Be sure to check the showcase between the two windows on that floor. Props from tarot cards, a Daily Prophet, Quibbler issue or Marauder’s map will grab your attention. I will tell you a secret - one of these props has not been used in the movies and this is the only object from the whole House of Minalima that has never been on the screen. Try to find it and try to guess why. If it’s hard for you, please don’t hesitate to ask a member of the Minalima staff. They will give you a hint or help. I am not telling!

The floor has an extended space where workshops are performed and additional props can be seen. That area is bright, colorful and … has the Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes concept art - from boxes for their candies, to funny leaflets. You can also see the standard wizard boxes with sweets. The chocolate frog, every flavor beans of Bertie Bott and many more are in that section. Remember to take a picture of everything you practically can!

Right after that, you can take the stairs to the next floor where more concept art will be displayed on each wall. The MACUSA crest and more Fantastic Beasts covers, posters, Salem banners and some funny props, straight from the set will greet you. Along with Newt’s case full of magical creatures. I will share a quick tip with you - if you are fast and observant enough, you will definitely see a niffler. I am not joking

This is the place where movies and books come to life, just close enough on your way to the theater where the Cursed Child is played at the moment. Be sure you have a large collection of images and that you have taken a souvenir from this place because … you will be back in a movie or two however each visit is more magical than any previous. Let’s call it personal experience.

At the very end, but not least important, I will share some directions and bus stops: You can use the nearby Gerrard Place / Chinatown (Stop P) for buses 14, 19, 38, N19 and N38 or Cambridge Circus (Stop D) for buses 24, 29, 176, N29 and N279). For the London Underground fans, please use Leicester Square Station and do the walking like I did. There’s so much to see!

For the ones who have already been here, please, feel free to share if you caught a niffler or took a picture of an exciting idea. What’s the funniest fact the Minalima staff shared with you?
Everyone else who have not seen this place, feel free to ask a question or tips for your time at this magical place.

Late Edit of this Post: For everyone who has decided to take a Harry Potter series fan tour around England, please feel free to visit this place after paying a visit to the Warner Bros, Studio Tour. House of MinaLima is a very special addition to the tour. If your budget is very limited, you can still come even without seeing the Studio but you will still want more of that magic. Feel free to check the my Tour review, on Local Guides.

Whoa! Good thinking  Hopefully, Mrs will like it too. Hope you’ll have as much fun as the big Wizarding World fans do (in case you’re not a fan already  ) My question was mainly with regards other studio locations like WB Studio Tour in California or perhaps, LBV tours. Not sure if I put my previous query wording right :stuck_out_tongue:

I have never been in those places you write about. Work, home, work, home - that’s how my life looked for almost 50 years. It has changed from a year. I travel, but only around Great Britain. It is an unbelievably beautiful country with many monuments and beautiful places.

You’re absolutely right on this one, @GeorgeR68 . Britain has wonderful landscapes. As a foreigner, I am amused by the landmarks all over the country as well. As a Harry Potter country, it can also offer HP travel opportunities. Rowling is a wonderful writer and I am curious to see the train views from all the movies on the route between London and Edinburgh someday. Please, update me or post photos on LG Connect, if you do that before me  Actually, did you have the opportunity to travel on the route already?

@FlameFox You asked: Actually, did you have the opportunity to travel on the route already? No, not yet. My future wife arranges the routes of our travels. We’ve been together for almost 10 years and I trust her immensely.

Point taken. Sorry for the distraction! Also, I agree with you on the routes Mrs organizes. Your Natural History Museum trip and the one to Raby Castle are one of my favorites. Spent like, half an hour to full hour looking at the Maps images of the castle as well. But this will be transferred to a discussion at your article.

I also wanted to ask if she’s on Local Guides? I am curious about her point of view and travels, actually.
