Places to Visit: Airport Park Sofia

This is one of the places one can rarely visit. If you happen to have a layover at the Sofia Airport you can take a look at the park.

It used to be beautiful and new. It’s now just beautiful and feels a bit urbex. Literally.
The park is located at Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport and you can get there pretty easy although, in case of using the parking lot stairs … mind your head. Yup, these are low.

Grounds area can be observed from the subway station where you can always take a panoramic picture or make sure there are plenty of similar to the internet images of the Terminal 2 building.
If you smuggle under the circular hall of the station you will feel extremely small compared with the tones of concrete all around you. In case of taking pictures, you will be getting wonderful results. This is where the urbex and post apocalyptic images begin. Even the observation terraces over the lake have week or missing floor. The pond (which is basically the lake but it does look like a pond) in this park is kind of small bust still has fishes. Fishermen as well. They are always hidden somewhere between the trees and wait patiently.

Mind to forget about wearing high heels. Or heels at all. Always wear trainers. In case you have taken the kids with you - forget about the playground facilities. They are nowhere to be found here. Nature overtook this place. It didn’t put aside the effort or waste time for that. There’s trees, grass and bushes everywhere. If your kids are monkeys, then you’re at the right place. Remember to take the adhesive tapes with you.
No coffee shop or diner’s can be found here. Like nada! The only food or drink you can buy is at the airport terminal where I would not recommend. Prices are high. I am serious.
Nature even overtook the small amphitheater. The place even had that, once. It’s still there but not functioning.
Surprisingly, the environment makes you feel human and yourself in the city. It was a strange feeling and at the same time nice. The only reminder of existing humanity are the airplanes landing above, at the airport and the trains arriving at the station.
Feel free to forget about sparrows, pigeons or crows. The Airport systems maintain this place bird-less. There’s only bugs and random animals. I haven’t seen foxes or small animals but you can beware of the snakes. There’s a pond after all.

In case you have already been here, please feel free to share experience or pictures of the place, It definitely has it’s own beauty. For the others, welcome to the other side of Sofia - the urbex experience.

P.S. No swimming in the pond. You won’t get superpowers. You may get a rash!

Thank you for sharing your detailed and informative post @FlameFox .

I’ve heard that Bulgaria because of this scenery that you had described here, is often chosen as a place for film-making. Is this true?

It’s awesome to hear that you know such detail about Bulgaria, @VasT . Yes, you have seen Bulgarian views and sets in many movies. The Expendables, Legend of Hercules, 300: Rise of n Empire, some of the Spy scenes (with Melissa McCarthy) are just a few of the titles. Even the next Expendables movie is currently filmed at NU Boyana Stuidio in Sofia. That studio is trying best to provide great locations and also support the smaller productions. Visits are limited but not entirely impossible for cinemaniacs. It’s not Hollywood but it’s what such productions need for many scripts.

We also have the Bulgarian Voices - this is choir, capable of making a simple melody sound like a remarkable song. You may have heard them in Disney’s Brother Bear and Avatar soundtracks.

Did you ask because the Airport Park looks like a dystopia movie set? (omg :D)

Thank you for your answer @FlameFox . I think it could be used as set. Don’t you think?

Undeniable, @VasT @ . Writing my second bachelor, I was like ‘scene 14 (airport park landscape, characters walking around the lak)’ … Hopefully, bureaucracy is the only reason we have not seen this place in a movie yet. Or, have we?
Not sure if it’s right to think that the local authorities should leave it like that or should they try to fix the situation. Such location remoteness often causes issues with maintenance. Proper example of blooper with charm

“Blooper with a charm”, nice one @FlameFox . I should pay it a visit, and I’ll share my conclusions. Sometimes, nature works in our favor.

Good luck with your bachelor.

Great to see it sounded funny, as intended. Many thanks, @VasT . Will be great to read your thoughts after the visit.

Thanks for the wishes as well … although, I am at the PhD already. The batch drama was like … 4 years ago
