Photo Tips - Video - AFL & AEL - TravellerG

Hi all,

A AF/AE Locked photo - locked close to the Arch (Mysore, India).

A short Video on Effects of AF/AEL.

Here is video, which gives more clarity of the effects of AF/AE Lock. Kindly have a look and respond, so that we can clear further doubts.

There are 3 Clips, in this video

  • 1st & 2nd clips with Emphasis on Auto Exposure and
  • 3rd Clip with Emphasis on Auto Focus.

Note: The scene in the video is shot to emphasize the effect. Under normal conditions, this is not a preferred / ideal frame. (The video was shot by a beginner and kindly excuse him, for the shakes)

Note:

  1. The video is to be watched for the effect, only. Once you understand the effect, you can try to set AFL/AEL on your mobile.
  2. Remember, AF/AE Lock, may not be available, in all mobile Cameras
  3. Sometimes, AF/AE Lock may be available, only for stills (Photos), and may not available for videos.

Few, essential points to remember

  1. Try to focus on an object, in the midpoint of the scene / frame, to cover maximum areas in focus.
  2. May be, it is a better idea, to select a point, maximum AWAY (from the camera) as possible, to obtain better focusing coverage.
  3. IMPORTANT: Try to focus on a point, which is average in lighting, so that high lit or dark areas can be covered in the shot well.
  4. Remember that, too bright spots will be washed off ā€“ hence try to avoid, too much contrasts of light, in the frame.
  5. NEXT is color: Try to make slight compromise, so that many other parameters can fall in line, together (do this by your trial & error).

May be, any of us will not use this setting very frequently, but, when needed and if you can set the LOCKS well, the result will be amazing! ā€“ There are certain situations, which auto mode will totally fail, whereas AF/AE Lock mode will provide very much acceptable results.

LAST HINT:

Do shoot sufficient shots & obtain confidence ā€“ there is no short-cut for this. Do not expect a perfect shot, right form the first trial shot.

Dear @DeniGu @PoliMC @AlexaAC @sonnyNg @davidhyno @Safdarrai @JohnPeter @NandKK @MoniDi @NareshDarji , could you please comment whether the video explains the AFL/AEL method / effect properly? Also, whether these are really helpful in practical Mobile-photography, for you?..Pleaseā€¦

Thanks

Hi @TravellerG ,

The video you shared explains the AF/AE lock effect wonderfully!

Your tips are also very valuable, especially the point about locking on an object which is average in lighting. This literally is a game-changing advice for me.

Thank you for the great post!

Very kind of youā€¦ dear @sonnyNg , thank you for your kind words. I will surely wait for your few shots, applying different settings, we have discussed - when time permits, please.

I have seen couple of your posts and photographs (along with our dear @FelipePK ), which I really appreciate.

I sincerely request you, as a photography enthusiast, to have a look at this Post, when free.

With my 3 decades of experience, in Professional & Hobby (traveller) photography, I am trying to bring in some reduction in POOR PHOTOS (Blurred & irrelevant), getting posted in our Google Map. If one of you take this mission with little more importance, I am sure, we can improve the relevance of the photographs in Google Map (particularly, applicable to this part of the world); Although, I have covered more than 36 countries & reviewed many locations, I feel, Asian locations need more quality / value to readers.

Thank you for your valuable time; in case, if there is an opportunity & if you feel that I can be of some help, let me know, please - I can be at your service.

Thank you dear @PoliMC for your motivating words. I shall try to bring in more clarity in Mobile Photography. so that, indirectly, it should help the quality of photos getting posted in our Google Maps.

Dear @AlexaAC , I still remember your night shot, which you posted (appreciate your contribution & demonstrated the same to many of my students).

I am sure that, by grace of god, I will see many more shots from you (& many others), using different settings, so that we can ultimately improving the quality of photos coming in our Google Maps.

Here is a previous post of mine, where I have tried to explain this series - when time permits, have a look, if you have not had a glance, earlier.

Thanks

That would be great, as I am really excited for more contents from Asia, @TravellerG !

I will make sure check out the posts.

You got/caught the crest, thank you dear @DeniGu .

It is also, an important point that, (refer to the photo published in the post), if I would not have used AEL & AFL - that too at a long distance focus, then, the ā€˜skyā€™ would have been washed out or the ā€˜treesā€™ would have been fully dark + the focus also could have been, equally, a problem - hope you got it.

Thank you very much for your EXCELLENT Catchā€¦ (you are truly a =P); a rare shot for us, we South Indians. As a photographer, I enjoy your pic in many angles

  1. A Photograph using, ā€œLeading Lineā€ technique, almost ending in infinityā€¦ Great!
  2. I donā€™t think you have washed your photo with any ā€˜SOAPā€™ (I mean, PhotoShop) - A virgin Shot = fully enjoyed.
  3. Good contrast (No high lights issues, etcā€¦ )
  4. Good frame. (full frame is ā€˜TALKINGā€™ about the same subject - no distractions)

Overall, fully appreciate - to me you are already a Pro.

==========

I captured such shots, when I was in Switzerlandā€¦

I am thankful, that my posts are of some value to youā€¦

With prayers to almighty to bless you.
