On January 30th, after a whole rainy day weather, four of us (friends & colleagues) decided to explore the walled city of Peshawar, it’s heritage places, the food and yes the history and different cultures aligned with it.
Peshawar is one of the oldest cities of South Asia, it has the key geographical importance. In ancient times Peshawar used to be the gateway to the rest of the world from Asia, this is the reason most of the greatest warriors like Sher Shah Suri, Alexander and many others used this passage and that’s the reason Peshawar almost demolished multiple times in history.
Our journey started from Kabuli Gate, this is the entrance to old Qissa Khwani Bazar, the named Qissa Khwani is taken because at this place the traders use to gather over traditional Kehwa (Green Tea) and share the tales of their journey these communities use to be the diverse one as it has participants (traders) from Afghanistan, Iran, Russia etc
Next we stepped into Dita Sweet House, which is one of the oldest and most famous sweet and confectionery shops, and tried some Halwa Puri for breakfast.
Passing from Namak Mandi the most famous food street of Peshawar which is famous for mutton (you might hear about Charsi Tikka) we checked into Jhangeer Pura, the traditional Peshawari Chappal market from where we again entered Qissa Khwani Bazar.
Taj Soda was our next stop. This place was established in 1936 & is the oldest soda factory of Peshawar, currently the 3rd generation is operating it. We tried their famous Doodh Soda (Milk Soda).
The excitation level pumped up as our next point of visit was Kapoor Haveli (the residence of Kappor Family i.e Raj Kapoor & Kareena Kapoor`s ancestors, the famous Bollywood Stars) The Haveli is situated in Dhaki, for this we use the passage of Shahwali Qatal & shrine of Hazrat Syed Ahmed Shah Bukhari (Buut Shikan), who use to be the companion of Shah Wali Ullah. The opening point is called Wazir Ith, the bricks of Mughals Empire is still here and can be seen.
That`s all about Part 01 very soon will be publishing second one, do share your feedback by commenting on this post.
