A few beautiful days in Iquitos…
Animal Rescue and Awareness Centers
If it is your first time in the jungle and before you want to be aware of the protection of wild animals you should visit CREA and Pilpintuwasi. I visited them at the end of my journey and learned that by treating the animals directly and without any protection you condemn them to a slow death. In Iquitos you will unfortunately find several pseudo zoos or rescue centers that allow this. So be careful.
To get to CREA you must take any public transport bus that takes you to Quistococha, tell the collector where you will get off, approximately 5 minutes before Quistococha.
To get to Pilpintuwasi you must go to the port of Nanay and take a boat to Padre Cocha, then a motorcycle taxi will bring you closer for less than 5 soles. Do not be fooled because there are other places that shelter animals.
To pass the time and get fun!
-
Quistococha is a beautiful place, actually it is a zoo and a shelter, with attractions and food, it is easy to get there, just take the public service buses.
-
The Iquitos malecon is a good place to sit down and have a couple of cold beers, local drinks or a delicious ice cream. You will find many tourists and many people who offer various products such as handicrafts.
-
You also can take the bus, is traditional in Iquitos
What to do
-
You must visit Belem, but with a local guide so you can see the good and the ugly of the place. I am referring to the bad because it helps you understand that our society is destroying the environment; poverty is a constant and the absence of resources in that population makes you think.
-
A good place to eat is Puerto Nanay. It is the place where boats leave for the whole Amazon.
-
In the center of Iquitos you can’t miss going to Blanquita and to the restaurant Al frio y Fuego (bring a bathing suit for the latter).
-
In the Amazon there are places to choose, but yes or yes, you have to do a walk at night, with a guide of course, have a little adventure in the river and swim in the Amazon.
-
I decided not to go to the Pacaya Samiria reserve because of the informality that it has, to begin with, it is to enter a National Reserve and obviously there are no services there such as a post or shelters, bathrooms, you have to sleep in tents and bathe with river water, etc. So far so good, the reason that discouraged me was the mosquitoes and the insecurity of the boats. My friend went, she managed to see many animals and had fun, but she mentioned that she would not do it again. I don’t know why the rafts everywhere give the impression that they are going to sink.
-
A visit to the museums on the boardwalk is a must. Museo Etnografico, Museo de las Culturas Amazónicas and Museo del Caucho.
-
Have a good drink at the Musmuqui
Be careful
-
Try to hire a good tour service for the Amazon. At the airport and near the central plaza is the Prom Peru information center, there you will find information on all kinds of accommodations, restaurants and legal tour companies.
-
Informal companies offer you the gold and the Moor and in the end they don’t comply.
What to bring
-
Wear sneakers that are water and moisture resistant. Two pairs are best.
-
Full repellent, the best you can get and if it’s biodegradable 20 points.
-
Long socks so you don’t get blisters from the rubber boots you’ll be given to walk around the jungle.
-
A good camera, cell phone and flashlight.
-
A good battery charger. There is no electricity in the jungle.
-
A waterproof bag to put a cell phone, camera and money.
