Magayon is the daughter of Makusog, the Chief of the tribe in Ibalon. She is known for her beauty and men from different places visit her to have a glimpse of her beauty. One of those suitors is Pagtuga, who is a warrior and the chief of Iraga. He woos her with gifts of gold and jewels. However, Magayon is not moved by his gestures.
One day, when Magayon was bathing, she slipped from the rocks and fell on to the river. She doesn’t know how to swim and plead for help. Fortunately, a man named Pangaronon was passing by the river and helped her from drowning. The incident turned into a loving relationship and a planned marriage. The news went all over the places and reached Pagtuga. He kidnapped the father of Magayon and threatened her that he would kill her father if she did not marry him instead. A loving daughter she is, she agreed.
On the day of the wedding of Pagtuga and Magayon, Pangaronon arrived and tried to steal away Magayon. They fought and Pangaronon stabbed Pagtuga to death. With love and happines, Magayon and Pangaronon ran to each other and embraced but Magayon was hit by a poisoned arrow. While Pangaronon is embracing the dying Magayon, one of Pagtuga’s soldiers stabbed him. Makusog decided to bury the lovers together.
Years passed by and the people noticed that the land where the two was buried grew higher and higher and is now called Mt. Mayon.
