Recently the yellow line graph showed up in my App with orange dots for each day we upload photos. I felt it was a nice gimmick to remind us how often or frequently we add photos. And it might even motivate us to contribute more photos.
So I set out to test it by adding some photos daily.
It did not go well. Or at least not as I expected it to work. And how I think most Local Guides would expect it to work. I would expect the graph to hold the number of photos uploaded per day for at least the period of time that the graph is showing = one month.
I soon discovered that dots are dropping off the graph long before the one-month mark. One example is shown below. On February 5th I added 23 photos. Earlier today I tapped on the graph to show the blue pop-up text for February 5th again. And now it says I only uploaded 8 photos on February 5th! What happened to the 15 photos? I did not delete them. Several dots from before February 5th have disappeared completely. At least one with 100+ photos.
Dear team, is this a bug, or is it working as intended?
Using the graph to motivate Local Guides to add more photos is not working properly. It might even demotivate Local Guides when the accuracy is this low.
Maybe there is an arbitrary limit to the number of pearls?
@DeniG , would you have time to escalate this to the relevant team?
Cheers
Morten
UPDATE:
Later the same day: The oldest orange dot is now from February 12th! The rest are just gone PUFF!
Could it be that there is an arbitrary max set for the number of pics uploaded per month? I uploaded another 55 pics today which coincides with the disappearance of more orange pearls.
SECOND UPDATE:
Now I have uploaded 99 photos today. And the number of orange beads fell to only two! I think this kind of proves that there is a maximum for the number of pics rather than a max for the number of days/orange dots. Hence I can conclude that the graph will not be useful as a motivational tool for Local Guides uploading more than about 100 pics a month. I can’t be the only one Please fix this. The number of pics uploaded yesterday has dropped to 1. 99 today + 1 yesterday could look like the limit is 100.
LAST UPDATE:
After having uploaded more than 100 photos today there is only one orange dot saying 100 pics (only).
My current Android version is 11.18.2 but it was updated just yesterday, so please let me know if more testing is needed in the newest version (I will add comments here if I succeed in getting more than 100 pics to stick on the necklace).
I hope I managed to make it clear how an improved version of this graph can have amazing motivational properties for nerds (like me). It is oddly satisfying to be able to fill up and see a full necklace. So much so that I several days in a row decided to take photo walks in spite of lousy weather just to see the string of pearls fill up. Seeing them just disappear is disappointing. So I hope the programmers can be persuaded into making the needed improvements.
Thank you for that info about your app updating yesterday. It would really help if you could monitor the behavior of the graph this week and let me know if anything is different from the previous weeks. Thank you so much!
If there’s still need to forward this to the teams, I’ll make sure to share your feedback, too.
The new version showed the following on the graph yesterday morning after the update:
3 pics on 19 feb
19 pics on 18 feb
29 pics on 17 feb 49 pics on 16 feb
Which is different from what I showed in my reply above. So I was hopeful that the issue could have been fixed.
Then I added 1 video and 1 pic yesterday. And then the graph showed the following:
2 pics on 21 feb
3 pics on 19 feb
19 pics on 18 feb
29 pics on 17 feb 47 pics on 16 feb
Notice how February 16th went from 49 to 27 as two new photos were added on February 21nd. So I believe we can conclude that the arbitrary max of 100 pics reflected on the graph still stands.
Let me know if you think screenshots are needed as evidence.
See I love the fact that you went through the research and even got data to do so. My only question is are the pictures of that area or pictures of any content on that dot a milestone for a photographer? I see it as really fitting for a tour guide. Or a treasure hunt for the big brother big sister program. These pictures took a long time and effort I just wanted to say you are not invisible when you shine from the inside.
